Default When playing as a ship.

I lately have been having fun playing as a ship instead of a sub.
first let me say I think the models are fantastic, I like them so much I keep trying different ones.

Now when I go on a mission as the popup comes up asking if I want to attack, maintain current orders or submerge, if I choose attack the ship fires it's cannons at the enemy target/s.
Then moving on after it has destroyed many of them the ship stops firing but there are still enemy ships close by, they are firing at the ship but no response unless I tell the crew to man the deck guns, I can't understand why it stops firing, any ideas please?

Slightly different subject, there are a few more 'Playable' ships I would love to try but they are not 'Human Playable' I keep trying to tweak them so I can use them but I need help, someone to show me what files to change and how, any offers please?

Col.

In Data\Cfg gameplay settings scroll to the bottom of the file and change the MiscSettings to like they are below, it stops the popup that comes up asking if you want to attack, maintain current orders or submerge, as for your other problem, someone might come along who knows the answer to it.

[MiscSettings]
AlwaysAutotargeting=1,1,1,1,1;for warships, merchants, uboats, air and land targets

How do you do that, is this a special mod you must load?
Thanks,

@XS

There are a few 'Human Playable' ships that can be downloaded.
If you do download any, read the instructions because some only play in career some in single missions.
Then use the JSGME to put them in your sim, also some I've found work better than others, some also fire torpedoes.

@XS
I found some on other people's posts, they sometimes have a link to their downloads, some have the ships.
I created a folder on my desktop named Playable Ships and I put them in there then I try different ones.

I am still trying to get a couple to work as 'Human Playable' but not having much luck, I have asked for help on another thread but as yet had no replies.
Also I am trying to change the Nationality on them to try them to play on the other side.

I have just downloaded and I'm playing the 'Asashio DD Playable'. This one is really huge, an incredible work
Works perfect in my special modified FOTRSU package where I changed to the stock campaign to fullfill the SH4 1.5 version which this mod requires.
I wonder how this will play out in a campaign. The single mission alone is a keeper. OMG, a renegade non-Japonese crew

Great, you may also notice that if you select some ships for a mission they appear partly sunk and if you try to surface they don't or they sink altogether and destroy.
I think I found the answer but not 100% sure, the mission you selected is set for the player to be submerged plus some of these playable ships haven't got the facility to dive or surface as well.

Another problem I encountered is in some missions the player sub is docked and you have to navigate out of the harbour, but if you select to play as a ship, depending on how long it is you may find it crashed at the stern, again if you really want to play that mission then it is editing the mission file.

There is also a bigger ship package here:

I have taken the current FOTRSU mod 1.1, I erase the following folders before loading it: Campaigns, Submarines, Sea, Roster, UPCData. Load this modified FOTRSU, then load ShipPack, Core files, AI-Vision, W09 patrol. It will work with all single missions IF your start on the surface. Eventually you must edit all single missions to start surfaced, I'm sure that's not too difficult, load these missions as a mod too. These ships are all for the US side, also campaign-playable, a dedicated War Patrol is even included. There is one japonesse Ise battleship but it will play for the American side, US flag included
Using a modded FOTRSU mod as a base has the big advantage to have wide camera views, and all the nice outside environment. You can use the unit view to walk around + the bridge view and you can easily switch from one to the next. It's really immersive to walk on such huge ships. The stock game doesn't allow that because moving around with the cursor keys is not implemented. You must therefore use FOTRSU or TMO+OTC as a base.

I started a campaign with the other mod above, the Asashio, but I spawned in the port exactly where another destroyer was anchored, I hear a terrible cracking noise, but then I give full speed and some high TC, after that I'm fine, no damages, hull still intact.

I play with the idea to build a specific campaign for playing with ships, the main problem is: I want to have some escorts going along with me, e.g. I'd like to play as a battleship with 2-3 DD escorts. That would be huge, but I don't think this is feasable unless: I make a campaign mission with a fixed route for 2-3 DDs and then I give the mission objective to join and follow these DDs to some historical 'hotpoints' where battles will occur, so I have also to create enemy spawings (ships and planes) which are random enough to make it interesting. Creating such missions could be easier than I think, or quite the contrary, I don't know, but for the moment going at sea alone with a destroyer will get you killed soon without support of any kind.
Also SH4 doesn't have any submerged submarines that I could assign as the enemy, so it's futile to mod a destroyer to launch depth charges (if at all possible, because technically your ship is a 'submarine', not a destroyer or battleship anymore!).

But a similar game will soon be released by Killerfish, a new ship battle game based on Cold Waters (see the thread).

Cheers,
XS

Also a very good idea with these playable ships in a campaign is: Use a lot the 'Report Convoy' button (the ship icon in the radio messages to send). This will get you support from nearby units or planes - hopefuly (i'm sure I can mod the necessary file to increase this support).
