The PPL ship still have a real ship that It resembles too. This one total nosense.There wont be any WWII ship even close match to this.I doubt there will be any modern ship this can match too either

It looks a little like the cruise ship "Oceanos" that sank in the 1990's but without the long forward superstructure. Kind of the same fat, streamlined look. Oceanos was French-built, 1953, so a few years after WWII's end.

There are two ship moddels declared to be Q-Ships in this forum:

One of them is
SCF = Small Costal Freighter



The othe one is
QSS=Small Q-Ship Merchant


I never able to 100% identifiy which ship these two were modelled after.Is it quite obvious these ship are there just for fun the author never declared they are after any real ships. But I put them here anyway so people can notice and in case someone wants to produce real model.Now let's see what are the real Q-ships loosk like.

As we can see here they all look different,only SFC marginally resembels USS Anacapa but they are not the same size. SFC is 78.5m long 2350ton weight, USS Anacapa is 102m long weights over 7000ton. There are a few thing we can summaries from these ship though:


Most of are medium size ships between 115~125m in lengh 4000~6000 in GRT
Most of them are old style KFK cargo ships plus a schooner a tanker and a few small ones
One of the empire ship standard type seems suited well as a Q-Ship model but as it is discussed in this thread before we have problem with that ship model too.

I've always been concerned about the QSS small merchant/small Q-Ship model - it looks like someone scaled it differently from other ships. There were certain optimal measurements for cargo ships of all sizes, and it just looks skinny and oddly-proportioned, with a strange shape to its decks.

In my opinion it should be easy to replace this model with a real Q-Ship, like HMS "Cape Howe" (AKA "Prunella") or HMS "Willamette Valley" (AKA "Edgehill").

"Willamette Valley"/ Edgehill was a good choice as a Q-Ship because she looked like many other merchants. The "Reardon Smith" company had a large fleet of freighters that looked like sisters or near-sisters to her - flush deck, low funnel, and panels enclosing the bridge wings.

"Cape Howe" / Prunella was also a pretty good choice with similar, generic looks - midships deckhouse, two masts, and 4000 - 5000 tons.

Unfortunately for the British, the Q-Ship concept was a total failure in WWII! Unlike WWI, many WWII U-Boats carried over 10 torpedoes, and submerged attacks without warning were more common....both these ships were sunk with many casualties. The US, as you may know, had an even worse Q-Ship disaster, when the "Atik" was sunk with no survivors.

I think both HMS Willamette Valley and HMS Cape Howe belongs to the British WWI Standard Type Merchant. I am still trying to classify how many type are there but not an easy thing to do.There are too many of them but not many have photograph or drawings.

HMS "Willamette Valley" was a different class from the standard WWI merchants. All those were reciprocating steamships. "Willamette Valley" was a motorship owned by Reardon Smith before being used as a Q-ship. She had a lot of near-sister motorships built in the 20's and 30's that worked for the same line.

If you look on uboat.net for British merchants with "City" in their names you can find some of these near sisters from Reardon Smith (Bradford City, & Vancouver City etc)...they usually have a short funnel with black "S" logo, low midships island, and square panels on the bridge wings. If I remember correctly there were about 10-15 of them in 1939.

A nice design, and in my opinion they deserve a detailed model.
