Correction; in the latter pages he does mention hydrophones. "...hydrophones had not been used to hunt submarines since the early days of WW1"

The escorts not continually searching via asdic seems to me the single biggest flaw that causes the weak SH3 escort ai. Hf-Df not being modeled doesn't help.
If there was a way to eliminate the hydrophones and enable the asdic to continously search that would be a huge step. But the game only uses asdic after a hydrophone contact and I believe that is hard coded.

Experimented a little, commented out the hydrophone and sonar sections of the sim.cfg file. Doing so has the game use the "maxed out" settings of the .exe file.
Loaded up the Gibralter mission looking for trouble. Charged at a single escort, crash dove when spotted and after a bit had over twenty escorts above me ! So much for that idea. Still got away with minor damage though.

I think half the Royal Navy was there !
I took a screenshot but for some reason where I tried to upload it said "file type not supported" even though I've put .bmp files there before. Strange.
