installing and running SH3 in 2020

So my step father *really* wants silent hunter 3 and nothing else up and running.
But his machine is windows 10.

He purchased the dvd game off ebay, I installed it for him and it gives the error that the O/S is not compatible and needs to be 95/98/XP/2000, etc,etc.
So I changed the compatiblity mode on it to XP SP2, same error. Tried running it as administrator, same error. Patched it up to 1.4, same error.

I then went and put the game on a windows 7 laptop that I have, same error.

I am an IT guy and I will find a way on this

So next I went out and put XP mode on windows 7 laptop, fired up a virtual XP mode VM, got an error saying that it can't run in virtual pc.

So questions...

Has anyone got this running on windows 10?

If so how did you do it. Is the steam version different/more compatible with windows 10?

Heck I even grabbed an old IMac that has 8G of ram, partitioned off part of the drive and put XP on it. I did get the game to fire up there but it crashes right after the intro screen because of an audio driver thing. (finding XP drivers for an IMac based machine is a bit tricky) still I'd rather not have it there.

My first preference is to find a way to get this to run on his current desktop under windows 10, if I absolutely had to I could put virtual box and a true XP vm up. But he is very computer challenged and would not want to do that. That and games sometimes have issues running in VM's.

If anyone has some thoughts on how I can get this up and going for him I'd greatly appreciate it.

I can assure you, vikingSquid, it does work on Windows 10. Steam version. Bin the DVD.

I'm using it with NYGM mod and it works very well.

Thx! That's what I was wondering because the dvd version of sh3 i've tried a bunch of things. thx for the help. off to steam i go...

Glad to see you got it running. I use an old DVD version, so old it had the Star Force drivers on it and needed to be patched to 1.4b. Nonetheless, I, too, have it running on a new high spec gaming rig in W10, in a manner wherein I do not need to have the DVD in the drive. In fact, my new machine does not even have an optical drive, so I purchased an external drive and connect it via USB.

It is immensely rewarding once you have worked passed the technical issues. I'm playing with LSH2015 mod, which greatly simplified the job of getting various upgrades and mods integrated into one simple installer package. I'm able to use the 4 GB patch, hsie and such to add the drama of wolf packs, new aircraft and ships and such. Yes, there are other ways to accomplish the same and there are other worthy supermods, but I find it so much easier with LSH2015's one-stop installation routine.

Another valuable resource is Berbster's tutorials, linked above. I would recommend them to all new players, and even veteran players. They are a mine of knowledge.

ahoi everybody, back in 2006 i was a real hardcore fan and player of SH3, later on i found Living SH3 mods and stuff, and i played alot (i played SH, and SH2 too) i have an original bought DVD, that i just dug out in the basement (sea map and shortcut stuff included. i really would like to play the game and try out mods. thing is, i got an iMac. so does anyone have an idea if it is worth to try? i already tried a VM running win10, won't work i think, i get a lot of error messages. i also tried it with bootcamp. win 10, but i got an error, which wouldnt even let me try to reinstall it. i read that i shouldnt install it in Programs (x86) folder cause of permission issues. as i said, afterwards i wasn´t able to try to reinstall the game, cause the error led to an abort of the process, cause of Star force i think. in general im able to solve IT problems, but i would like to ask here first if someone got it to work or if its not worth the try. thanks in advance. ahoi Kameraden!

Hi Kretschmer O. A warm welcome to Subsim I dont have a Mac maybe the errors were due to your original SH3 dvd with the starforce protection if you can download steam games onto you mac i would try the steam download of SH3 its cheap as chips now.
