Nevil Macready, Commander-in-Chief of British forces in Ireland, with Winston Churchill heads to a Cabinet meeting at Brahan Castle.


General Pershing, former commander of the American Expeditionary force, returns to France for a visit.


Ship Losses:

Palestine (Tunisia) The brig was in collision with Clan Colquhoun ( United Kingdom at Valletta, Malta and sank. All on board were rescued.

Mahatma Gandhi abandons Western attire and adopts a simple loin-cloth worn by many of India’s poor.


Ship Losses:

Salina (Norway) The cargo ship collided with Jan Breydel ( Belgium) in the English Channel between the East Goodwin and South Goodwin Lightships (both United Kingdom) and sank with the loss of fourteen of her 25 crew. Survivors were rescued by Jan Breydel.

U.S. Army Air Service begins conducting bombing tests against the decommissioned battleship USS Alabama. White phosphorus bomb are used against the ship.


Bernard Barny de Romanet, French aerial ace with 18 victories and former world record holder for aerial speed, is killed in a plane crash.

Assassination attempt is made against Polish Marshal Józef Piłsudski by Ukrainian nationalist Stepan Fedak in Lwów (Lviv, Ukraine). Piłsudski escapes unharmed, while Fedak accidentally shoots himself when he was apprehended.

Ship Losses:

Colombia River (United States) The schooner was wrecked on Sunday Island, Queensland, Australia. Her crew survived.
Ingeborg (Sweden) The schooner was driven ashore at Kumnaes and was wrecked. Her crew survived.
USS R-6 (United States Navy) The R-class submarine sank at San Pedro, California. She was refloated on 13 October. Subsequently repaired and returned to service.
Seifuku Maru (Japan) The cargo ship was wrecked on this date.

After multiple hits by aerial bombs as part of a U.S. Army bombing exercise, the decommissioned battleship USS Alabama sinks in Chesapeake Bay.


Ship Losses:

USS Alabama (United States Navy) The decommissioned Illinois-class battleship sank in the Chesapeake Bay after use as a target from 23 to 25 September by aircraft of the 1st Provisional Air Brigade (United States United States Army Air Service)

American test pilot John A. Macready sets an aerial altitude record by reaching 40,800 feet (12,400 m) in a Lepere biplane.


Piloting the same United States Army Air Service Packard-Le Peré LUSAC-11 fighter that set a world altitude record on February 27, 1920, Lieutenant John A. Macready sets a new world altitude record of 10,518 meters (34,508 feet). Macready receives the Mackay Trophy for the flight.


Ship Losses:

Lambaness (United Kingdom) The cargo ship ran aground at Land's End, Cornwall. Her crew were rescued by the Sennen Lifeboat.
Rigmor (Denmark) The schooner ran aground at Akureyri, Iceland, and was wrecked. Her crew survived.

2nd October 1921

General Pershing, former commander of the American Expeditionary Force, visits the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris.


William II of Württemberg, the last King of Württemberg, has passed away. Like other German monarchs, he had been deposed at the end of the Great War.


Ship Losses:

Triton (Denmark) The cargo ship ran aground at Gosvarosen, Norway and sank.
Tanana (United States) During a voyage in the Territory of Alaska from Fairbanks to Tolovana with 21 crewmen but no passengers or cargo aboard, the 495-gross register ton, 149.6-foot (45.6 m) passenger ship – a sternwheel paddle steamer – struck a submerged snag on the Tanana River 1 mile (1.6 km) above Minto, turned toward shore to beach herself before she could sink in deep water, and sank in 6 feet (1.8 m) of water. Salvage was impossible in 1921 due to the imminent onset of winter, and by the time the weather began to moderate in the spring of 1922 she was beyond economical repair, so she was stripped of her machinery and equipment and abandoned.

The U.S. Supreme Court opens its first session with William Taft serving as the Chief Justice (The Taft Court will take a laissez faire attitude on the economy, striking down regulations, but generally refrains from striking down laws affecting civil liberties)
