Does anyone know how to replace the sounds? Which software to use? I'm lost...

I use GoldWave to edit the sound files and have used it since SHCE - SH1 came out many years ago.
https://www.goldwave.com/

It that what you are asking?

Yes. I intend to replace the bridge sound (the water splashing one) with SH4's or SH3's. Something more realistic to my taste. When all-stop the splashes get to my nerves. Hard thing is to find a software that edits the sound files from SH1. DO you also know which file is the water splashing? I'm guessing one of the MEL files...

aanker, do you know any other freeware software to do that? Goldwave is very professional for me and gotta pay but if there is no alternative I'll go with it...$15 for a year.

tks

Sorry, I don't know which file the sloshing water is, it's been a long time.

In case you get creative, the Silent Hunter I speech files are *.RAW files and should be saved at 22 kHz and 8-bit monaural format.... (important to know this)

GoldWave can be used for many other things; it can open and save the *ogg sound files in SH4 for example. $15.00 is well worth it..... but I do remember when it was free. My license doesn't say a year - it's a one time thing unless I'm missing something on their webpage.

There is a sticky post in the SH4 mod forum that lists software and may include a freeware sound program:

Good luck.

The Goldwave life license is 45$. I found a software called Audacity which is free. It does import RAW files and I'll check it out.

BTW aanker, are you a member of the Pacific Thunder group in Yahoo? Are they still up? tks again...

Yes I was but then SH4 came out and the PTC split off to form another group. I became sidetracked with modding & playing SH4 and took a break from the campaign. It hasn't been active in a number of years.

A couple of us are thinking about possibly starting up again, only thinking...

I forgot about Audacity - just remember the voice *.RAW files and should be saved at 22 kHz and 8-bit monaural format if that option is available.

Happy Hunting!

If I remember they used to receive patrol reports using ULTRA and assign/award all members. Something like that isn't? It made the immersion more realistic by enhancing interaction with HQ I guess. Just like the Virtual Airlines with Microsoft Flight Simulator...

btw I did find the annoying water sound. It is the 9.MEL file. I just deleted it and the sound was gone. My issue now is trying to convert the wind sound from SH4 to 9.MEL format in order to hear the wind when on the bridge.
The .RAW sounds I just loaded some to check them out. Pretty cool!

Yes, command assignments went out to the SubRon commanders from BuPers, and each cycle patrol orders were sent out to the SubRon commanders from ComSubPac. The Squadron CO's would then pass the assignments out to their skippers.

After their patrols, the members would write up a patrol report and send it to their CO's & ComSubPac. As in real life, some were prolific writers and others submitted their basic patrol results. Awards & decorations were presented to the skippers using a secret criteria, and then the next cycle would begin.

It was a lot of fun but also a lot of work for the brass. As the membership numbers went down there were fewer people to take leadership positions, and some were doing double & even triple duty, plus their own patrols.

Yes, a lot of fun while it lasted .... and wonderful people too. I still have 'real' friendships with some PTC alumni : )

Happy Hunting!
