Seattle is a rather expensive place to live and just for the reasons you cited, Jimbuna. I did a quick 'n dirty search and found this; maybe it will help give a perspective:

Cost of Living in Seattle --

https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Seattle

There is a little box right underneath the "Cost of Living" title on the website; if you enter the name of another city, it will give you a comparison between Seattle and the city entered; as an experiment, I entered London, UK and the site returned a comparative list of costs and actually automatically converted the currency values into Pounds. Give it a go and see if it might let the lad make a decision...

BTW, does his company also give a relocation allowance to ease the burden of cost? Might be something to ask about...

Sorry, Jimbuna, but, for some odd reason, it appears my reply posted twice; please delete copy if you wish...

That link is very much appreciated, I'll send it off to him

I've no idea of the details regarding expenses etc. but he has messaged me a few minutes ago stating his biggest concern would be the cost of living.

Factor in he would probably feel the need to sell his house here in the UK plus the fact he has a definite job in the pipeline for the new year here in the UK and my hunch is he won't be moving abroad.

This is great news. Hard work truly does pay off. A big congratulations to young James and to you Jim and the rest of your family.

I doubt he'll go for it CW, he has gone quiet on the subject since and with James that usually means negativity.

He's confirmed this morning he'll be leaving Indonesia on 8th and arriving back in the UK on 9th but no mention of the Seattle job.

He flew into Singapore earlier to find his flight from there was overbooked by five places and he was one of the five chosen.

He was informed he would need to pay an extra £300 to board a flight tomorrow and feeling rightly aggrieved phoned British Airways from the airport and they agreed to waive the fee and put him in a hotel overnight.

I can see him fighting for a full refund when he gets back into the UK.

He should have sailed, in the tracks of holy Greta.

Sorry, could not resist. Wish you all a happy reunification soon.

The whole episode has added another 24 hours to his vacation of over two months so he'll have to live with that

How's it going with your son, Jim - did he make it home in time before the SHTF all over? I mean is he with you in the UK or at home, or locked down in place somewhere else on this planet?

All I know is that all Holland American cruise ships have been recalled, but most have no home to go to.

I have friends that just took a cruise March 11th and the cruise was stopped in the middle of the cruise on March 15th in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

They had to fly home fully reimbursed for their trouble.

They might be able to use Captain James for ferrying the ships to another port
