SHO This is a dedicated post to identify those nameless ships

Ever wonder all those nameless generic ship roaming around your SH3 champain map:
Where they all came from?
Are they modelled after real ships?
Do they have a proper name?
Are they showing up at the right place at right time?
Are they assigned to the right country?

Here is a start



Ship Identified TALTHYBIUS Cargo Ship

It was named
KLCS=Heavy Merchant











Talthybius was a 10,224 GRT Cargo liner that was built in 1911 by Scotts Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd, Greenock, Renfrewshire, United Kingdom for a British shipping line. She was sunk at Singapore in an air raid in 1942. Salvaged by the Japanese, she was renamed Taruyasu Maru, serving with the Imperial Japanese Navy until 1945 when she either struck a mine off Sado Island and sank or was sunk in an attack by aircraft of Task Force 38. She was salvaged by the British, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Evenlode. She served until 1949, when she was scrapped.

It seems it is used by norweigin only but may some captured by Germans ans borrowed by British

SHO Ship Identified Navajo Class Fleet Ocean Tug Boat

It could be listed as

The Cherokee class of fleet tugboats, originally known as the Navajo class, were built for the United States Navy prior to the start of World War II.[2] They represented a radical departure from previous ocean-going tug designs, and were far more capable of extended open ocean travel than their predecessors. This was due in large part to their 205 feet (62 m) length, 38 feet (12 m) beam, and substantial fuel-carrying capacity. They were also the first large surface vessels in the United States Navy to be equipped with Diesel-electric drive.[2]

The first three vessels, Navajo, Seminole and Cherokee, were constructed from 1938 to 1940 at the Staten Island Shipyard division of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Navajo and Seminole joined the Pacific fleet in 1940, and Cherokee went to the Atlantic fleet. Navajo was en route to San Diego from Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, and immediately reversed course to Pearl Harbor once news broke of the Japanese attack. She became a critical element of salvage operations there, as did her sister ship Seminole, in the days following the attack.

SHO Ship Identified Kachosan Maru Cargo Steamer

KSSJ = Old Cargo Steamer













This class consists of KACHOSAN, KASAGISAN, KASUGASAN and KATSURAGISAN MARUs completed between Feb and Jul ’25 for Mitsui Bussan K.K. KACHOSAN and KATSURAGISAN MARUs were requisitioned by the IJA, KASAGISAN MARU by the IJN in ’41 and converted to an auxiliary transport. Those three ships were sunk in ’44 and ’45 from various causes. KASUGASAN MARU survived the war and was broken up in ’65.

Builder and Year Completed: Tama. Mitsui Bussan Zosensho, 1925
Gross tonnage: 2,427-tons Dimensions: 284.1' Lpp x 42.0' x 23.3' Propulsion: One reciprocating triple expansion steam engine, 1 shaft, 1,200 n.h.p. Speed: 10 cruising, 12 max. Armament: Various depending usage.


Personal Optinion:Because this ship small tonnage and basic MFM configuration this type of design can be applied by almost any ship builder and they only differs in finer details eg. ventilators, cables, hull shape,superstructure details.And there are evidence suggest Japan ship builder does copy design from european ships so this class can be classifed as generic cargo ship.

SHO Ship Identified Marine Artillerie Leichter

LCMAL = Naval Artillery Barge
or
LCMFL = Naval Flak Barge















With a length of nearly 35 meters, the Marine Artillerie Leichter (MAL) were the smallest landing craft in Kriegsmarine services. Designed after the requirements of the German Army, those small vehicles should be used during Operation Barbarossa, the attack on the Soviet Union. Their projected operational area was the Caspian Sea where the MAL should be used to attack Soviet oil transports from Baku to Astrakhan. Therefore the MAL must have been able to be transported by land which was impossible with the bigger MNL or AFPs.


Notes: There were 160 of these ordered around 46 actually commisioned.All after 1943 May and most around D-day so most of them dont have a very long life span.3 sub type I,IA,II.It seems the model is after a II type but did not model very correctly(but I could be wrong).In the archive it shows a split bottom level structure then a bridged top level stucture.I couldn't find a separate flak model so I guess they are the same thing.

SHO Ship Identified Almeda Star Passenger Liner

LPL = Large old Liner






















In 1925 Blue Star ordered a set of new liners for its new LondonRio de JaneiroBuenos Aires route. Cammell Laird of Birkenhead built three sister ships: Almeda, Andalucia and Arandora. John Brown & Company of Clydebank built two: Avelona and Avila. Together the quintet came to be called the "luxury five".[1]
Cammell Laird launched Arandora on 4 January 1927 and completed her in May.[2] As originally built she measured 12,847 gross register tons (GRT), was 512.2 feet (156.1 m) long, had a beam of 68.3 feet (20.8 m) and accommodated 164 first class passengers. She had a service speed of 16 knots (30 km/h). A major refit in 1929 reduced her cargo space and increased her passenger accommodation to turn her into a cruise ship.



Notes: All five ship under go refiiting around 1935 with length and tonnage increased extra mast and kingpost removed and they come out with different top structure arrangement as well as hull shapes.All five ships were lost due to German U-Boat.

This model seems after Arandora Star after refitting was done however the dimension is not long enough and a bit too fat but still within tolerable range.

Prabably one of the most common merchant in SH3.Couldn't match this in any ship building database.Imaginary unit?

radar Ship Not Identified NACG Cargo Steamer

I think this one exist in most people's ship library however couldn't find any reference to it.


There is a map on the ship navigator table shows some kind of inland location don't where it is.



Anyway ship size of this needs to have a proper reference otherwise have to kick out of the fleet.

Author Unknown - can someone points out who made this ship originally please.






Has been Identified as EHRENFELS Class Cargo Ship build by Deutsche Schiff- und Maschinenbau A.-G. Plant AG "Weser" from 1936 to 1940 has 9 sister ships in total

They Serve as Cargo Ship,Sub refuler,Troop Transporter,Mine Layer.What stands out is that Kandelfels later became the famous HSK-5 pinguin who sank or captured 28 ships with a total of 136,642 gross register tons in 357 days at sea,including capture a majority part of Norweigin whaleing fleet whale factory ship S.S Ole Wegger, S.S. Solglimt, S.S.Pelagos. Goldenfels later became merchant raider HSK-2 Atlantis which is also very fruitful.


Thing to Notice: The model features a 2 by 2 derick&mast mounting the real one shows a 1 by 4 mounting.I searched other similar models see if there is a 2 by 2 derick&mast design couldn't find one.Dimensionwise the model and the ship match 99% so this has to be the ship.
Suggest reclassified this model as auxilary cruiser with two loadout transport and merchant raider.When use as transport apply default configuration when use as merchant raider put guns on and take extra kingposts off.Also change the mast&derick set to 1 by 4 and some minor details.Any ship modeller want to get this job done?

Good observation! When I made that model I was actually inspired by the freighter "Cyclops" (NOT USS Cyclops) but the civilian, British ship sunk in 1942. Cyclops and Talthybius may have been sisters - they were both large cargo ships owned by the same company (A. Holt/Blue Funnel Line), and had many similar features with crane design & superstructure shape.

I tracked down 6 ships of similar design. There could be more though merchant are not as easy to track as navy ships

The difference SS TALTHYBIUS is longer and heavier and have cross beam at 2nd pair of kingpsot,SS CYCLOPS dont have it.The difference is quiet significant So they are not sister ships but they do resemble each other a lot.

Besides the use of former civil tankers, a class of specialized supply ships, the Dithmarschen class was build for this task. Although nine ships were ordered, only five were commissioned (Dithmarschen, Nordmark, Uckermark (ex Altmark), Franken and Ermland). They were able to supply warships with fuel, ammunition, supplies and spare parts, in addition they were also equipped with towing equipment to support damaged Kriegsmarine ships. Their payload capacity was 7933 t fuel, 972t ammunition, 790t supplies and 100t spare parts.

Notes: There were about 60 AMCs served Royal Navay during WWII 5~6 distinguishable group of ships plus few individules.This ship also resembles those Cunard A-Class ship a lot but closely compare I am confident It is the Bay Class ship it was after.Bay Class ship features a longer forward deck area.The different from the model and the ship photo is that the forward and afterward dericks which is attached to the ventilator is removed but this could be true when the ships were converted to AMCs.


There is no indication that any fo these ships was served as hospital ship.However because of the MFM design was so common it's still under revision whether using this model as a hospital ship is approperite.
