USS Spearfish

First patrol out of manila in our Sargo Class. Ordered to patrol out of Cam Rahn Bay. Made it to AO without incident. Merchant spotted and attack set up. Fired two fish, one impact on target, one ran circle. Conning tower struck, both scopes destroyed, air radar mast destroyed, deck gun and AA gun destroyed, severe flooding, men down on deck. Emergency surface and repairs underway. Completed repairs while en-route back to Manila. Pulling into port to end patrol aaaannnnndddd CTD.

Reload save and RTB to CTD again. I just can't catch a break with this bad luck

Sounds like my SH3 days using GWX. Usually sunk within a day of patrol.

It's not as good as my previous video, but the U.S.S. Sculpin takes her final patrol before I move to a Gato-Class submarine.

The coolness of September seemed to fail to reach this part of the world as we headed out to our first mission. Taking the sub out we had the rear of the boat rather cramped with a spy and his raft added to our crew allotment. It took us almost a week but we slipped in at night and let our extra crewman paddle to shore.

We had been seen by a plane as we entered the bay so we took a route to the west moving out of the current bay and into a neighboring bay. Our objective was to create havoc drawing attention away from our spy.

As we moved into the bay it was as if manna was falling from heaven. We hit 3 individual ships and sent them to the bottom of the sea; running to our next target avoiding the sub chaser roaming in the bay. Then came our last target.

As we were moving into place for our third attack we picked up warships quite a distance away. They were far enough away that we were not all that concerned. We moved into a large signal and found a tanker moving towards us. It was a large tanker and it was moving fast enough to indicate the captain had a load to deliver. We positioned ourselves and waited only bringing up the periscope to confirm our fix on the ships location.

With patience the ship moved abeam of us allowing us to get off two fish that would not let the crew react to their trails. The cover of darkness and no moon helped. The first torpedo ran in front of the ship but the second torpedo nailed it in the aft quarters. With a large potential for warship action we chose to preserve our remaining torpedoes and finished off the tanker with our gun. As it broke up and sank we ran into position to discover just what it was we were about to confront.

It did not take long for sonar to report that it was picking up a huge number of props turning at different rates throughout a sweep that covered more than 40 degrees spread. I dropped the periscope and we went down below the thermal to 230 feet depth. The sub felt like we were in the middle of a boiler room instead of a sub. We kept water and salt pills moving among the crew and soon we had the confirmation we were looking for. Three warships formed the forward screen while a large large array of ships were behind that screen. The rear screen were two destroyers.

We continued to sit on the lower realm with more than 1000 yards of water beneath us if needed. Everyone had a rise in moral as the report came in that we passed the screen without detection. With two ships now 1000 yards away we began our ascent to periscope depth. Unfortunately by the time we reach that depth we had ships moving well past us. The moonless night gave me only vague shapes to aim at with not much else. I thought I saw some large merchant ships and a more but it was not the time to do anything but act. First the forward torpedoes, two per ship. Then the rear torpedoes and two per ship. And then a quick return to the cold depths.

Halfway down there were reports of the recognizeable CLANG followed by the BOOM of a torpedo impact and ignition. We had a mix of calls torpedo impact but also torpedo missed reports. Two ships could be heard breaking up and got chalked as kills. We turned to the direction of the convoy and followed at the quick pace of 2 knots. After a period of time elapsed we saw two ships that fell back. We had injured ducks.

It took almost two hours but we were positioned in a good position for the worst damaged ship which was moving so slowly that we could catch up with it. We came up to periscope depth and gave this ship a needed sinking. I spun around to see the second ship was moving better but had fire coming out her port side. We sent two more torpedoes at her starboard side and dove down to move away. Our job was done here.

It took several days of ducking and dodging to get out of that bay as we had war ships and aircraft constantly searching for us and we had a lonely pair of torpedoes in our forward tubes remaining. We slipped out without damage and out of the islands into the open sea. This was supposed to be our trip to home port but HQ had a different idea, they wanted us to patrol the China Sea.

We headed to Midway for refit but got interrupted by a fast moving merchant that turned out to be a large European passenger ship. Our lonely two torpedoes slowed it down and our deck guns finished it off. Everyone was celebrating and that made the trip for refit easier to handle. We had now been out to sea for 3 months. Merry Christmas. We returned to the sea to our next task in the China Sea.

The boat had spent some time at a Florida port, probably Port Everglades. Before leaving, we had taken on some important guests. If memory serves, they were Norwegian Navy officers. We were taking them on a short “demonstration” trip to strut our stuff and show them what the U.S. navy was made of. (Truncated)
I have lurked here for a while. I signed up to say that that was one hell of a story.

It's now one of my two favorite Navy stories, the other one is humorous and involves someone trying to cook a tin of Jiffy-Pop popcorn in front of the AEGIS radar, hurriedly sweeping the smoking mess over the side, the CIC freaking out, and the ship having to file a report of a one mile wide UFO 100 meters off their stern.

bullhorn Long time lurker...

Hi guys, apparently I haven't been on this forum since 2007...wow.
Anyway; I knocked together a video of Silent Hunter IV. Very little happens, and I daresay a lot of the facts I spout are either a/ vastly simplified or b/ plain wrong...but it's possible you'll find some enjoyment in it. Or not!

I just really enjoyed going back to a game series and interest I'd long forgotten (and that seems to have fallen on hard times, alas).

As a side-note, is it worth me trying SH5? (I realise this question is in the wrong thread, so PM replies would be fine!).

Cheers guys,

Jenson

Default Not the correct way - BUT

I know this is not the correct way but it works and is fun! I spot a large convoy, 4 escorts and a lot of targets. I have my two best men on the deck guns. I headed for the closed escort at flank speed and open fire at 5500 yards. After sinking the first escort I head right at the next closest escort. After sinking that escort, I let the guns go on the convoy. I will sink two or three of the convoy before the next escort is in range. When all is done I have sunk all escorts and have fun picking of the rest of the convoy.

PS: I can not bring myself to play on the other side. No U-boats!
