Tonnage Talk!

For the ship nerds out there...

When SHIII talks about tonnage for merchants, is it talking about:
  • Gross tonnage
  • Net tonnage
  • Gross register tonnage
  • Net register tonnage
  • Displacement
  • Deadweight tonnage

I am assuming, though I suppose that is risky with SHIII, that warship tonnage is displacement?

I would guess the tonnage on warships is full combat load. When I sank HMS Hood I was awarded 48,500 tons which is her historic "deep load".

Interestingly enough, The real victory cargo's displaced 10,600 tons (7200 (gross), 4300 (net), 10,600 (deadweight) and we are awarded around 10,500 tons or so for sinking one.

Those are just two examples. The more I look at what we are rewarded and real displacements, the more they match up with GWX. Now, with stock SHIII, the tonnage we are rewarded might be the gross number instead. That is my guess though.

I am in GWX.

Traditionally, merchants are described by their cargo carrrying capacity, which can be described in different ways. Warships, obvously, do not carry cargo, so that is irrelevant.

I know this has nothing to do with gameplay... just wondering, though.
