Default Game Crashes When Loading "working" Saves?

Hello!

First I'd like to say hello and thank the community here for all they've done. The mods, help, etc. are fantastic!

Hopefully someone here will know what to do about this problem I'm having.

I've been playing the game without issues for several days. I opened it up one day, and all the save files for my career won't load. I get a "Silent Hunter IV has stopped working" error about 3/4 through the loading process on all saves; even ones that were working fine. Saves at port were working, so I made some fresh saves last night and checked that some of those were working. Today they are not loading; both the ones I checked and the ones I didn't.

Any idea why this is happening and if I can do anything about it? These fresh saves were working fine and now 'randomly' aren't. It's like the entire career except at port is corrupted. Why would files that worked fine just randomly not work? If I start and save other careers, they load fine...

Fixes I've tried:
Allowing SH4 to use more RAM.
Reinstalling the game and mods.
Deleting some saves.
Using fresh saves.
Saving away from 'action' (contacts, under water, etc.).

Config and Mods:
i7 4790k
EVGA GTX970
Asrock z97 Extreme4
OS on SSD, game on HDD.
Updated Windows 8.1

Generic Mod Enabler v2.6.0.157
Game Fixes Only Mod v1.1
New Orders Bar Menu
RSRDC_SH15_V400
RSRDC_V4XX_Patch1
GFO Patch for RSRDC
TDW_Ship_Plane_Fire_Damage_v1_3_SH4

Maybe relevant pieces of information in the 'debug' screen I get? (sadly I'm not entirely sure whats relevant or not):

Unhandled exception at 0x002548E3 (MessageNet.dll) in sh4.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x3EB0DF42.

Unhandled exception at 0x002F48D8 (MessageNet.dll) in sh4.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0xFFFF8080.

If THEBERBSTER's suggestion doesn't work, which version of the game do you have? Where did you get it from? Download or disk? Where is the game installed on your computer? Since you say "OS on SSD, Game on HDD" I'm going to say that you are NOT in Program Files (x86) \ Ubisoft, correct?

Had you enabled a mod, and then used a Save from a previous version of the game? That can corrupt things (cross-contamination), as can having mod issues. I'm not sure the "TDW_Ship_Plane_Fire_Damage_v1_3_SH4" works with GFO and RSRDC, and the "New Orders Bar Menu" (Webster's, correct?) might have to be after the Patch, but I can't remember for certain on either... Be sure you read all the ReadMe files for both GFO and the Fire Damage mods. The GFO Patch will "fix" any "damage" done by the RSRDC install. It'd be good (educational also) to read lurker_hlb3's ReadMe files also - and he's got a bunch of them in there...

I would empty the Save folder, "My Documents / SH4 /" and start over with fresh saves. You'll have to re-set your screen resolution and other "defaults..." as you like them when you do that...

Mods are very touchy, if they're not in the right order, you can cause some problems.
GFO and GFO for RSRDC might be conflicting with each other. Try removing one.
I'm not sure what "New Orders Bar Menu" is. You might want to put that after RSRDC.

Good luck.

I just noticed this is your first post.
Welcome aboard to Subsim!

You'll have a lot of questions and don't be afraid to ask. We love to show off our vast knowledge of the game.

Now go help polish the propellers. I got a volunteer so I may shut them down the job.

I have the exact same issue here.

First time playing any subsim game, now on my first career 5th patrol.
This is the first time I encounter this MessageNet.dll crash.

For full story:

Start off from pearl harbor, head to midway asap for a refit, then head west.
About 350 nm west of Midway I come across a glitched task force. This task force has 3 battleship and 1 carrier plus some escort. If I shot torpedo at the leading battleship, the game crash as the torpedo get close to the battleship. I can avoid this crash by alerting the fleet by any other mean first before attempting a torpedo attack at the leading battleship. Tested method include sank one of the escort with deck gun, torpedo other capital ship, surface right by the lead battleship. In the end I finished the task force's all 4 capital ship, and the rest of the escorts just move along. On my way back to Midway for a quick refit, I found another task force with 4 maya. Killed one of them.

After refit at Midway, I go west to Honshu. There I make two saves in a roll (no ship around/ on surface, TC1) and then tested the saves. The saves works but upon loading the saves I get "torpedo in the water" message like 16 times. Since the saves appear to be working I decided to call it a day. Next morning I wake up and load the saves, the MessageNet.dll crash happened.

Applied the 4 gb fix and then start off from the commander office again for the same 5th patrol. I encounter the same task force and the same torpedo attack crash has occurred. Not sure what to do next.

I guess I will just follow the same route again. Hopefully with all these fixing and patching the glitches will be gone. In any case I won't be leaving the game until I finish this troublesome 5th patrol. I will still be making saves so I can test them out afterward.

If anyone here would like to investigate these crashes I can provide them with my save files.

Spec:
Windows 7 x64.
16 gb ram, i7 6700k.
970GT
DX9.0c and latest display card driver installed.

Stock v1.5 without any mod, fresh install in c:\game\

Since you don't have much of a campaign file to worry too much about, I'd delete what is in the My Documents / SH4 folder, and start again. You are installed in a good folder, but if you're using a "short-cut" to start the game, is it pointed at the "GU.exe" file, or the "SH4.exe" file? Only use the "SH4.exe" file to start the game. Also, are you using "Run as administrator" on the file? What screen resolution are you trying to run the game at? What resolution is your computer set to?

The stock game does have some unrealistic groupings of ships, as you've already found, and some strange AI at times, so once you get things settled in, I'd go for some mods, like... oh, I don't know, maybe - Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate maybe?... or any of a number of other great choices...

Short cut pointed to "SH4.exe", game and window resolution both set at 1920*1068 60 Hz

I redo this 5th patrol following the exact same route. So first of all the glitched task force mentioned above, remain glitched. I killed all 4 capital ship. Next up the 4x maya task force, either I went to the wrong place at the wrong time or they didn't show up, I didn't see them this time. After refit I went to Honshu and complete my first mission. Then I was sent to east china sea for the next mission. Finish that mission as well and I am now just looking for some tanker to kill

I make 10+ new saves during this second play though, and all are glitched. However all these newer saves can be loaded successfully after restarting the game.
If I try to load these saves while in the game, the game crash. This time I didn't overwrite any old saves. Each of these saves are make in new slot.

The logical answer to this is too much data being stored.
When you exit the game and load the game save you are starting again from scratch.

Overwriting previous game saves is likely to cause corruptions, you should always make a clean game save.

Finished my 5th and 6th patrol.

For my 5th patrol, I make it to the port and ended it. All saves make during the process remain glitched and can only be loaded after a game restart.

On my 6th patrol, none of my saves are glitched and I can load the saves in-game. There are 2 minor glitches that I encountered.

1) One of the battleship that I "sank", flipped upside down but didn't actually sank and remain afloat. I notice that if I make a save there, and reload it, the map will show both a "ship sank" icon and a "ship contact" icon at the same spot where I've sank the ship. The upside down ship remain there and with loads of torpedos I can break it apart and sank it for real, but the "ship contact" icon will remain and I won't get additional sank credit from doing that.

2) The next glitch follows the one mentioned above. As I go ahead and sank another battleship of the same class, that battle ship sank as usual but I don't get the credit from it either.

Reloaded to a save before glitch 1 and sank that first ship again properly, does not prevent glitch #2 from happening. Not sure if the two glitch is related or not.

Also all saves from patrol 6 were done at a new slot.

The problem is most likely to be because of the amount of data that is being stored each time you make a game save.

Do not overwrite existing game saves.
Making a manual game save and then exiting the game clears all the data.
When you start your game and load the last game save you should not have any problems.
