The NSA thinks you are posting too much and too often and suggests that you get back to those chores you have been putting off.

I'll do my best to shed some light on this matter....

As many of you are now aware, SubSim found itself under a sustained and unprecedented attack yesterday from spammers base in the orient.

The timing was during sleeping hours across the pond and in the early hours of the morning here in the UK so you could say it happened during my watch.

The SubSim protocol already in place for such an event was immediately acted upon but such was the level of the attack no reasonable time could be given for a response so the decision was taken (by me) to go immediately to Defcon 1 in order that no further damage should be accomplished by these (insert appropriate expletive here).

In excess of 260 posts in various parts of the forum (mostly GT and SH3 Mods Workshop) as well as more than 20 accounts had to be hastily expunged because the attack was ongoing even as remedial action was being carried out.

At the conclusion further investigation showed at least one thread (music) and possibly more in GT had been lost. The outcome being that some members have lost posts and suffered a reduction in said post count (I personally lost 3500).

Personally speaking, I'm not overly bothered but if any member feels differently they should contact Neal and ask for a reinstatement of post count number.

Neal is investigating the possibility of reinstating any lost threads but it is not sure if that is possible.

I can only apologise for any detriment anyone feels they may have suffered, this was not intended but desperate times called for swift and decisive action and having spoken to Neal yesterday I take comfort in the fact he is happy in the actions I took.

Further protocols are now in place which hopefully will mean there is less possibility of such an event happening again.

Famous last words.

It is understandable that in dealing of such mass spam attack, some real threads get mixed in as well.

All good.

I'm not that fussed about lost posts either, I'll work my way back to Nimitz, although I'd rather be ABC, maybe one day.

Thanks for your patience. I did some db maintenance and it seems to have restored the user counts. Ranks look normal again. I cannot find the missing threads (2) anywhere in the db. I will check the backups, but will have to wait until I get to a friend's house to use some unlimited internet connection. Even then, the db is 6GB+ so it may be a lost cause as far as time/effort is worth it.

If it was just the two threads (terrorist thread & music) I wouldn't worry about it too much. Oberon already made new 'terrorist' thread and we can just make a new music thread.

I appreciate that, Dowly. Restoring a thread is possible, not all that difficult, even for me, but getting the backup db moved across the web is a chore.

Good job we weren't still using the Animal Film Club then.

Don't worry about the music... I'll just post my links all over again so you can re-enjoy my favourite stuff.

Would a forum with thousands of users be something that one could sell advertising space for?
