Soviet ambassador Aleksandra Kollontai warns Sweden of the consequences of such Union.

Molotov visits Berlin and demands German troops to leave Finland.

Soviet Union again demands Germany to remove all its troops from Finland. Germany does not respond.

27/11

President Kyösti Kallio resigns due to medical reasons. Risto Ryti is voted as president for the remainder of Kallio's term.

Finland celebrates its 23rd Independence Day.

Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov warns J.K. Paasikivi that a Neutrality Pact between Finland and Sweden would violate the terms of the Moscow Peace Treaty. (It only mentions alliances etc. directed against either party)

Molotov also lists the persons Soviet Union does not wish to see considered to become Finland's next President. The three names on the list are: Mannerheim, Kivimäki and Tanner.

Finnish composer Jean Sibelius turns 75.

Major-General Paavo Talvela meets with Generaloberst Franz Halder.

He also meets with Reichsmarschall Goering, who tells Talvela that Germany is also against the Neutrality Pact between Finland and Sweden.

Former President Kyösti Kallio dies.

23/12

Helsinki City Court orders the 'Finland-Soviet Union Peace and Friendship Society' to be disbanded.

J.K. Paasikivi suggests giving Petsamo nickel mines to Soviet Union in exchange for SU territory elsewhere.

Mannerheim requests to resign as the Commander in Chief of the armed forces.

He sees that the amenable attitude towards Soviet Union demands threatens Finland's ability to defend itself in a possible new war.

Mannerheim is also afraid that giving up the Petsamo mines could result in the loss of German support.

President Ryti convinces Mannerheim to continue as Commander in Chief.

Wood carburetors become mandatory for all vehicles except diplomatic and emergency.

First parachuting course begins in Luonetjärvi.

16 volunteer LRRP soldiers take part, each making two jumps from a Douglas DC-2 of Squadron 4.

The course is led by Air Force Captain Eero Erho.

General Headquarters confirms the new wartime strength of the Finnish Army. (Figure is not given, but the FA had ~475,000 men and women at the start of the war.)

Recruitment of volunteer SS men begins in Finland.

Foreign Minister Rolf Witting meets with the new Swedish ambassador to Helsinki Karl-Ivar Westman.

Witting assures Westman that the leading circle "never wanted to take Finland on any adventures and instead wanted to focus on building up the infrastructure of the country."

He however adds that he cannot guarantee what will happen in the next couple of months.
