Star shells

Do star shells actually do anything? It falls down to the water very quickly just like a normal shell. I thought the typical star shell would ignite then slowly falls down to earth thus illuminating the surrounding areas you want to investigate.

Yes the should but I don't remember any in SH5 just distress flares but I'm very rusty not played it for arges sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong
