Super! Looks like you can do a super accurate USS Cobia straight from the box according to the review posted above. That's the one I would have wanted to do anyway, seeing as how its the first fleet boat I ever toured and the one I have visited most (Manitowoc should be a regular pilgrimage for any Chicago-area subnut ). I'm inching ever closer to getting it, I just hope that if I do my somewhat less than spectacular modeling skills wont ruin this masterpiece...

I just got this model as a birthday present from Dan, so I am clearing the deck to begin. Has anyone built this model yet? Got any tips?

Now thats a nice birthday gift!

Havent build it, but here's a tip.

make a Model under construction Thread
and keep us updated on how the models start to take shape!
because others can give you tips in the progess, and others can learn from your build

Tip #1: Check out the photo-etch and other aftermarket detail sets.

Thanks, guys! Wow, I'm excited to begin.

So, what is a "detail set"? Some higher quality parts to replace the stock parts?

yeah, detailed sets or photoetched sets are just replacement pieces with greater detail for the stock!

Yep, higher quality, greater detail, or even custom parts for conversion. Take a look at the great work being done by Siera in his 1/72 U-boat construction thread.

For example, I just ordered a laser-cut wooden deck for my 1/72 Type IIa U-boat kit, to replace the stock plastic one.

Holy.... Bill... I don't want this guy to hate me cause he now has to cough up 500$ for extra detail.

I got this model a third of the way finished, havent realy had enough time to finish it. This model is huge though. It streches 4+ feet when fully assembled. It is as long as my queen size waterbed is wide.

Just to add to what Herr Pete and Bill said: That's what I was talking about when we looked at the model at your place - the deck was filled with holes, and the photo-etched deck set that Bill linked has this.
http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=EU53028

The deck plates now have real holes in them. Of course Dan is right too; all this can get expensive.

Have a look at this link:
http://www.rokket.biz/models/modelsw...allessio.shtml

The best place to visit for the Gato class subs, and some unusual custom aftermarket parts, aswell as tips and advice You can find here:

Good luck with the build Bill.

Bill,

It took the better part of the night but I just finished reading Siara's U-boat thread. There's no way I am going to try the stuff he masters, I don't have that kind of skill

I may try some of the parts you listed to see how they look, though. :hmm:

Don't worry, Dan, I'll always have the great story to tell about this model

My model build thread begins here.

Neal
