Default Depth charges not doing damage at periscope depth?

Hey everyone. I was attacking a convoy. However, I did not realise the water was extremely shallow, about 17 meters under keel. I torpedoed my targets then got out of there. I could only dive to periscope depth and destroyers started dropping depth charges. These, even though exploding next to me, didn't do any damage? Also, as the destroyers passed over me, they hit my conning tower, which did not do any damage, except to my deck gun and AA guns, but made them explode.

I thus decimated the entire escort just by standing still. I then surfaced my boat to engage some of the merchants with my deck gun. Their ships were armed and hit me several times however this didn't do any damage either.

Is this normal? Are these know bugs?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I am playing vanilla, no mods installed

I'm playing career. What settings in the gameplay options would affect this? I have everything enabled except "No external view", "No Map Contact Updates" and "No stabilize view".

Have to say.. am completely confused..

Sounds like somehow, you achieved god mode status.. to which I'm at a loss as to how this could be.

From what I recall of, playing in a non mega modded state, of getting the stuffings kicked out of Me, were I in that situation aka shallow waters, getting the snot kicked out of Me via depth charged & rammed by destroyers... add to that of being pelted by deck gun fire & machine gun fire... and taking damages would end to the tune of My sub becoming scrap metal, rusting away in the virtual ocean.

yeah, my mistake.
i got my sub simulators mixed up.
i have a couple of other simulators with options to limit damage.
SH4 is not one of them.
My apologies.

This is the first time it is happening to me, it wasn't like this last patrol. I will delibaretely expose myself to see if this is still an issue.
However, could the shells not damaging me mean the caliber was too small?

Just to clarify things, where did you set your difficulty level, at the Main Menu or in the Office?.

Office, but I don't think there are any settings (at least in vanilla SH4) that allow you to change difficulty, in terms of the enemy.

I attacked an enemy task force earlier today, and surfaced just to verify that I take damage from guns, which I do. However the destroyers hunting me were depth charging random locations, and often reversed into their own charges, killing themselves (2 died this way).

Do mods such as FOTRSU make the game harder? I never have problems infiltrating or escaping convoys, and it is getting quite boring.

TMO v2.5 and RSRD v5.75 have tougher enemy capabilities. especially once the IJF gets their radar working. they can detect you before you detect them.
the mods above are not as glitsy at FOTRSU but the enemy is tougher.

Don't even waste your time with stock, load TMO or another good supermod. Many get flustered with difficulty, but even a harder mod, if you play long enuf you learn what you can and cannot do against the AI. With each attack there are lots of factors to figure in that determine the risk of a good attack and survival. Your goal is to stack as many factors in your favor when you attack to survive harder mods. With proper tactics you should never die, course one mistake...
