Default Type I vs Type III Torpedoes

Ok just wanted to put this out there as a discussion piece and was curious what other Commanders had to say about this, I've personally found myself not sure which Torp type to choose from. Both types have their pros and their cons and they are better than Type II's so there is always that.

Ok so Type I's have better range and variable speeds to use which is good, I have also found that they tend to pack more punch when it comes to impact detonations though they could just be me getting lucky. Downside is the wake they put out and completely unreliable when it comes to the magnetic detonators either not going off or more often than not blowing up before they get near the target.

Type III's on the other hand have no wake and can more reliably be used for magnetic detonations, downside to them however is the range isn't as good I feel at the very least when it comes to something like convoys where I get spotted before I can even line up my targeting solutions.

So here is the big question which torpedo types do you prefer, and why? Am I just crazy? Does anyone actually attack from the extreme ranges provided by the Type I? Whatever insights are appreciated, hit me with your opinions that's why I've opened up this line of discussion, and if this has been discussed before then please feel free to link me to the thread. Sorry if this has been rambly and incoherent, sort of a spur of the moment idea.

I tend to avoid type I when possible, even preferring type II with magnetic pistol.
Of course i get many bad torp, but as i systematically set 6M depth magnetic for all ships to avoid the fastidious clicking book identification ... working good so far, even better when type III becomes available.
Type I is too catastrophic on magnetic pistols…
Distance is not a problem either, I always try to infiltrate escorts, preferably from front, firing very close plenty times between convoy rows.
Until 1943… where comes the Fat torp and later the Lut ones, an other story…

Is it true that TYPE I (steam torps) have higher malfunction rate with magnetic pistol compared to TYPE II?
