Default Need help with the torpedo tutorial

Hi everyone
I'm new here and also new to the game, so far I have been able to pass all the tutorial but I can't get past the torpedo one.
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong, i input range, AoB and speed in the data pad but when I fire i miss every time, I don't know what to do

First, you'll need to ensure the values you put in the scratchpad are going to result in a good solution.

Make sure you identify the target and check that in the scratchpad.

Range: accuracy depends upon the highly inaccurate stadimeter. RAOBF is more accurate. If you have map contacts on, the compass can be used to measure range with high accuracy.

AOB: if eyeballing, it takes practice. If plotting, it is pretty well accurate. RAOBF is also accurate.

Speed. If doing the scratchpad stop watch (or any stop watch comparison to known and optical length), then ownship should be stopped and target crossing close to zero bearing for best accuracy. Plotting is most accurate.

Without fancy tools RAOBF, calibrated stopwatch), plotting two range/bearing pairs at an interval of 3:15 and measuring distance between them will give you target course (and thus AOB) and target speed.

After entering each value and clicking the checkmark, you need to click the checkmark again to transfer them to the TDC.

Lastly, make sure your muzzle doors are open before firing - the slight delay between hitting the switch and the fish leaving while waiting for the doors to open will result in missing astern almost every time.

It should also be mentioned that, to the extent possible, try to shoot with a low gyro angle, within 20° from your bow. That means the torpedo doesn’t have to turn very much. There is a gyro angle readout on the TDC - make sure it reads anywhere from 340 - 20. The reason this is important is that it all but eliminates range as having an impact on the solution. Once you get better, especially at rangefinding, then try to shoot at larger gyros.

Range is only really needed at higher gyro angles, especially at close range. The only reason there is a range dial on the computer is because you’re not literally firing torpedoes out of the lens of your periscope. There is a concept called parallax error, which is caused by the distance between the optics and the point at which the torpedo gets on its course. The range setting is there to account for error caused by parallax. When the gyro angle is low, you can imagine that parallax is hardly a factor anymore (as optics and torpedo course are more aligned).

So seek to minimize to gyro angle so that you can all but eliminated any errors caused by inaccurate range.

If you are completely new to subsims...

You need to come up with a procedure when entering information into the TDC.

It should be a procedure that is done the same way over and over again.

Every now and again this procedure may be interrupted due to weather, angles of attack, etc.

Once you figure out how to manually attack, make a procedure to ensure you do it right, and the same each time!

My procedure
1) identify ASAP
2) Angle on the bow (if target is far away)
3) speed
4) range

I do this every time. Good luck!

Completely concur.

My procedure:

1. Identify (I'll cheat on this part and have the Weps do this for me).
2. Plot a range/bearing pair at around 8000 m.
3. Wait 3:15 then plot a 2nd pair - this gives me speed and AOB.
4. Repeat 2 and 3 at least one more time; preferably two mores times. I'll try and get pairs around 4000m range and again at around 2000m range.
