I tried to do this on a historical mission and it didn't work. I must be doing something wrong...
You really have to be at a very great distance?
I would like another video or trick ^^

It will not work if the ship changes course or speed, if it is set to "Defective torpedoes" in the game settings; also, in the mods, the deviation of the speed of torpedoes from their nominal value is implemented. In my demo video, ideal conditions were simulated just to show how the spreadsheet works.
