The problem with the Emil is that even though you have ∞-1 MG bullets they aren't powerful enough to do any damage and you have almost no cannon ammo...
Emils were known for that. We all know that German aircraft cannons in the early war suffered from poor muzzle velocity. Pair that up with a slow rate of fire and sitting way out on the wing can really make using them a pain. To top it off you don't have a lot of ammo for them.

My solution, as with all MG/Cannon armed planes is to use your MG's to spot your shots and help you land your cannon. That way you're only firing your cannons when you'll know they'll hit. Cannon armed planes, especially with two in the early war is quite rare so its definitely an advantage that has to be used to its full extent.

Other than a patched IL-2:1946 is there anything else I need to play with you guys? I've had TeamSpeak for years.

Krhmm... Adolf Gallands eight thesis on gunnery:

It is well known - from gun camera footage and combat reports - that a number of errors, with regard to aiming and shooting are made on a regular basis. It is likely, you have the same issues:
  1. You shoot from too far away.
  2. Your lead is wrong.
  3. You shoot from unfavorable positions
  4. Your coordination of the aircraft controls is not smooth enough
  5. You are not using the weapons control systems properly
  6. You rely on tracers for aiming
  7. Your aircraft and guns need proper adjustments.
  8. You are using inefficient ammunition load outs

MGs have different trajectory than cannons, and MG tracers have a different one than "normal" AP ammo.

It's not that you're relying on your tracers for aiming. It's using all those rules and then bringing in your cannons only when you're sure of a hit. It's falling in line with numbers 1 and 3 more than anything. If you're in a good firing position you should be putting as much lead on the target as possible. Meaning you're fairly close, in turn suggesting that the cannon's difference in trajectory and shell weight has no bearing on the firing.

It also sounds like you're suggesting that the cannon shells are going somewhere completely different than the machine gun rounds. It's been quite a long time since I've playing IL-2, but the convergence point for your weapons should not be so much different from each other that they are coming together at widly different places making this method a waste.

Beh, know the feeling, I jumped a Hurri only to find he had two other friends My engine got shot up but I managed to follow one back over enemy lines and knock him down, only to get a Triple A to the cockpit on the way back

Of course you bring everything to bear when at close range, but at close range you don't need tracers for aiming the cannons. At long range one might need them, but it's just not wise to use them for aiming because of the trajectory(assuming target is not near the convergence point) and muzzle velocity differences. The IL-2 convergence point is still what it used to be: all weapons converge there. I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but it's also possible to set up different convergence ranges for MGs and cannons. Highly useful in for example BF-109E4: wing cannons set to 120 meters for those close range kill shots, and the nose MGs set to 300 meters for longer range pot shots(their convergence doesn't matter much as they're in the nose anyway).

Check out this tool: Sniper's corner. It's really really useful for visualising different targeting situations and comparing different weapons.
