Default TMO wins

OK, I've played careers in RFB, FOTRSU, WDAD, Dark Waters, and TMO.

TMO with the RSRD Campaign rocks it. FOTRSU comes a close second, but it's too easy, not enough duds, too many unrealistic giveaways. TMO is hard. I like that. I play with 90% realism (Can't give up that free camera). That is all...

Which do you prefer? And why?

I naturally prefer FotRSU. Way more merchant ships, way more airplanes, way more capital ships, etc... plus, if you want more duds, activate one of the three extra mods for that specific purpose, which can be found in the Extras / AddInModsPack folder (plus several others). Next full release will have harder AI escorts. We don't have to do a thing to the airplanes, unless you want more of those too ( )... TMO / RSRDC is really nice, don't get me wrong, but keep a history book by your side, and you won't miss much. FotRSU will not play the same way twice across a dozen tries.

I find they work for different feels, kind of like WWII movies. When you want torpedoes akimbo as you are the last best hope to kill this Japanese carrier fleet and its battleships...Fotrsu. It’s heroic in nature and designed that way: lots of good chances to attack capital ships, plenty of explosions, and you can ride off into the sunset as the escorts founder behind you making thematic noise. Plus, it’s graphics are hands down the best out there.

When you want to feel like a grim battle on Guadalcanal is going on and killing that cruiser hauling ass down the slot really matters, so you risk getting in to 2,000 yards, then fire a heavy spread at low speed and shallow depths bow on with your own math so that you don’t get circle issues...and dive desperately while turning away after the shot...then dud...dud...impact! Impact! Yes! It’s not dead but AirPower will get it in the morning, time to play cat and mouse with the destroyers...TMO RSRD

They are both excellent mods with their own strengths and weaknesses. Comes down to player preference.

TMO is a complete mostly bug free mod that has been around a while. Combined with RSRD, hard to beat but even RSRD TMO can get old due to your learn the convoys and what to expect. I have incorporated great parts of RSRD but still have random traffic mostly, with some convoys and vessels etc put in at certain times and days. However, Ducimus has not been active in the subsim community for around 4 years or so, so TMO has not been updated.

I am currently working on an update, have it roughly 60 percent complete. This includes adding a plethora of ships and planes, as well as redoing the traffic layers and want to adjust things so realistic night surface attacks are possible.. Also changed up the depth charges, keeping the great and challenging AI but less killing blows, but charges that will cause enough damage and overwhelm your systems. With the AI in TMO, more likely to happen.

FOTRS is great, love the ships, new missions etc. but see it has some improvements I feel are critical to play this sim. Once is visible smoke for merchants (vickers better smoke mod) can (as in real life) visually track merchants (some warships) from 7-10 miles depending on conditions. This mod really changes the the sim for the better. Especially with so many units in FOTRS having radar warning equipment and have to use your SJ radar sparingly. Really great if playing early war prior to SJ radar as well.

Second, something TMO has the FOTRS sun does not is the Radar Warning Receiver for player subs. This is a key piece of equipment to have in 44 and 45.

Looking forward to the improved AI in FOTRS etc , I'll likely always run both as I appreciate them both.

They did have them though, along with cut conns:

USS S-42 SS 153 photographed from the deck of a neighbouring sub.
Dutch Harbor, Alaska 1943. Notice the sea and air search radars installed on these older boats.

from http://pigboats.com/subs/s-boats4.html

Remember, the deck gun was bow-only, in case you think you are looking forward there... lol - I was reading about the first one to get the SJ was in the South Pacific (Noumea??) in late 1942, but I cannot find the article. It was one of the Asiatic / Brisbane boats though... I can't remember the SD install, but Fremantle comes to mind... maybe...

I perfer FotRSU because like Mr. beanie said, you have a TON of new units, and addon mods.
What I really disliked for TMO was:

1. I got sent back in time, from July 1943 to June 1942, I found a patch for that but that meant I had to restart my career.
2. You are basically stuck on the same boat class that you were assigned too.

I love in FotRSU that neither of these things have happened.

Do you mean https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_S-42_(SS-153) ??

Specifically the "S-42 (SS-153)" part? Because no, they did not "name" submarines back then. During the "V Class" builds, they were still numbered, but received "names" shortly after. In the case of the S-42, the "S" denotes the clase, the "42" denotes the number of the boat in that class. The "SS-153" notes the hull number of the submarine of all submarines, so S-42 was the 153rd submarine built by / for the US.

I just got killed on my 8th patrol, June '43, north end of the Celebes Sea by a pair of subchasers. I guess trying to torpedo them was a mistake...oh well, I guess it's time to start another career.

What'll it be? FOTRSU or SH3?
