Support [REQ] Editing .act files

Hello all,

I would like to understand thurther how possible it is to modify .act files (SHCollisions.act, Sound.act...) from the root folder ? What about .dll ?

I believe these files were made using Ubisoft's tools, things we don't have.
I'm thinking about "Kashmir", thanksfully Skwas made an alternative for .dat, .zon and so on...

From what I know, Hex editors are the only way for editing such files (I tried the files get corrupted when saving ).

Not to mention there was an unofficial 1.6b Patch for SH3 years ago so this should maybe be possible.

Of course any idea is welcomed no matter if you know something or not

Dependency Walker is a free utility that scans any 32-bit or 64-bit Windows module (exe, dll, ocx, sys, etc.) and builds a hierarchical tree diagram of all dependent modules.

You cannot distribute the ACT files either in a mod, as a mod or as a single file, doing so will get you more than a slap on the wrist, you have been warned.

Thank you for answering. This is only for personal purpose so I'm not planning for sharing anything.

I didn't know that by the way, for what reason because I do not intend changing SH4.exe ?

Editing the .ACT files is the same as messing about with the .EXE, (meaning, you are not modding the game anymore but are infact hacking it).
I have no idea if its still the same today but that's how it used to be, that's why I warned you about it before you got yourself in trouble.

Send Jimbuna a PM, I believe he was involved in the GWX mod and if anyone edited those .ACT files those modders would know about it.

Interesting as others have distributed edited .act files in their work. I.e., both H.sie and Stiebler patches have various modified .act files in them.

Anvart released a fix for SH4 Air Torpedoes that included a edited .act file
if I recall correctly. That was quite some time back.

I also doubt Ubi is concerned based on the LSH 2021 release and their response to Neal.

Even the Mission Editor for SH3 was edited a long time ago.
That allows for placing ships closer to each other then the stock editor.

When GWX was doing a SH4 release? I edited the SH4 mission editor which was never released since GWX4 was dropped due to SH5.
