Default Patrol area assigned

Hello there again Kaleuns!

I have yet another question about TWoS and missions. I'm doing the Eastern British Coast 'mission'.

Patrol area assigned. Reach AN 7934 and start operations. Attack any enemy contact.

I worked my ways through the depths of Subsim forums, google and all that, and learned how to use the grid in the map, etc. etc..

Question is: Does the 'can't leave' that grid still apply? Do I have to stay within AN 7934 for whole 48 hours and cannot save? What if there is a contact (which I got) a little bit outside that grid? I can't chase it and leave the square? The square seems awfully short to spend 48h in . And still can't save? The posts I've seen are old, perhaps it has been updated somewhat. Let me know please.

The firstmissions EBCW IIRC are only 24 hours with a grid area of 120kms
My tutorial explains all you need to know.

Ah, okay nevermind. I didn't get the radio message the first time saying the patrol time was 24h and radius of 120 km, hence the confusio . Must have bugged. Started a new career and all is fine now, patrolling one tiny grid seemed way too small, that's why I found it strange.

Another question: finished the british coastal waters and moved onto the northwestern approaches. What would be more realistic? Move through Orkney and Shetland (perhaps too dangerous) to get to the NW approach or move north of Shetland? If I go north of Shetland I'm afraid I'll run out of fuel sooner and shorter patrol ability because of that

Move through Orkney and Shetland
That is what I do.

Fuel will not be a problem either way.
Patrol times are now 48 hours 200km.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully Ill get better merchants to sink. East coast seems way too much trouble, too many aircrafts, DDs and way too little merchants, and even when I do find a merchant theyre either small or neutrals. I got lucky though, found an ocean liner, a cimaron tanker and a medium composite freighter unescorted during the night. It was a blast! (Pun intended), even though 4 of my torpedoes were duds. Had good luck and bad luck at the same time, but managed to sink them all, the medium composite freighter ate my deck gun.

I have a related question. I too am on the Coastal Waters mission of SH5 TWOS. I completed the first two patrols in that area (and didn't sink a darn thing because i'm not very good at this u-boat captain thing yet). I was told to go to the third patrol area further up along the coast. I can't recall the exact grid right now. I actually managed to sink my first merchant vessel! I kept patrolling well past the 24 deadline and never got a mission accomplished message in my captain's log. The game eventually crashed so i lost that kill.

Why didn't i get a message that the patrol was complete? I'll point out that I saved the game after the 2nd patrol and before i entered the third patrol area. Exited the game to run an errand and then continued when i got back. Does the no saving apply to the entirety of the coastal waters area or only to the specific patrol radius?

I aslo have questions about how the game progresses after i complete the coastal waters patrols. There are two more missions on the map. The Scapa Flow raid and the other patrol off the north east coast of Britain.. They have different end dates. Do i return to base after CW to completely end that mission or do I just refit and head back out for the other missions if I so choose?

You must have strayed outside of the area possibly.
It is important that you know what your patrol boundaries and the time the your patrol starts.
Check this out.

TWoS is 100% ctd free, so what are you up to?

You can use Player objectives from the OFEV.

Player Objective Icons position.

Objective icon showing is on.

New orders.

You can switch the icon off and only use it when it is needed.

I really don't think i strayed outside the patrol area. I've been using the grid tool and marking the center of the patrol are and drawing a 120km circle around it. When i load up the save between the 2nd and 3rd patrols should I move well outside the coastal waters area and them move back into the third patrol or just take my chances and immediately start the third patrol?

That objective icon would be helpful since I've had to go into my captains log to find this information.

As for the crashing, I've added the Speech Recognition mod by skwas and i've found that it can occasionally crash the game when certain commands are given. I've learned that if you send a command to recharge the batteries it crashes and now also learned that battery recharging should happen automatically so i can forget about that command anyway. I REALLY like the voice commands. Hopefully that mod won't cause too many problems.

Hi SJC
Voice commands for basic instructions works fine and generally it is quite reliable, however when you get into attack mode this is where problems start to happen.
If you use it for change of speed, navigation, diving depths, crash dive, surfacing, these type of terms then it should work well without causing a ctd.
If you play with real navigation then ordering a new course also works well.
I would also recommend making a game save every 15 minutes if appropriate will make sure you will not waste your gaming session.

I was under the impression that saving the game in the middle of a patrol is not something you want to do. Isn't it best to save only when a patrol is completed and you are at sea and away from any contacts?

I tried completing that third patrol last night and it still said the objective was in progress even though i hadn't even entered the patrol area.

I've decided to restart the entire coastal waters patrol over again since i was getting an annoying bug where ships spotted while surfaced were not being reported in the message box. I could hear the crew call it out but there would be no written record of it. Since the crew is speaking in German i wouldn't even know where to look. I also suspect ships were not being rendered until they were much too close.

I've seen instructions on how to change the spoken language of the crew but it seems that TWOS doesn't backup the English language audio folder so i can't restore it.
