So OpenFalcon is a later version of FreeFalcon ?

Could I get links for OpenFalcon and Red Viper please ? I couldn't find those at all. There must have been one hell of a "Ceas and Desist" scandal that wiped out 99% of the stuff out there.

Every search I've run for them has come up with nothing but dead links.

Unfortunately I can't give you links here, because both those links as I found them were on the most notorious BitTorrent tracker website in the world (and those are the exact links you'll get from the development groups' forums, too) :p

You can search for "redviper" or "openfalcon" (one word).

And I think both are later FreeFalcons. RedViper is supposedly just a re-named v4 of FreeFalcon...
But yes, there were a lot of messes with F4, both legally and in terms of fierce arguments between modders and groups in the community. Being a lurker in the community, I fortunately missed all of those - but if you think the modder squabbles in SHIII/IV communities were bad, you should feel fortunate you haven't seen the ones over F4

OK jumping in here. I saw Falcon AF at my local store and am wondering if that is the one to get since getting hold of Falcon 4.0 might not be so easy.

Well in fact unless you go to something like Ebay, you're pretty unlikely to get the original F4 in general.

I don't have AF, though I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's light years ahead of the original falcon! But these mods certainly give it a run for its money, and are certainly superior to it in things like variety of units, graphics (yes, RedViper and OpenFalcon look better than AF), and certain aspects of modeling.

I think one big reason to get AF would be if you like Multiplayer. It's a lot easier to find AF players for multiplayer, and thanks to code improvements I believe AF makes for a very good MP experience generally.

Go for it. I may get AF one day, but frankly I still consider the original Falcon mods to be somewhat better.

Falcon 4 AF is a pretty good product, its basicly falcon 4.0 with a bunch of fixes and enhancments, mainly in realism and stability (no real graphic improvements) it also features the "expanded" cockpit of the others with working switches for most controls and a real cockpit.

Funny thing is you can take RV and in theory install it ontop of AF, which will be a near identical copy of the original f4 with RV. This however the devs of AF do NOT want you doing (they also have been activly campaigning to get rid of RV).

AF also comes with a massive 700 page manual (or something around that size), though only in electronic format.

If you go the Superpack route, get BMS 2.0. It is a must.

Just my 2 cents.

Sure, though there are some reports of possible glitches related to it. Some people have reported issues with RWR function after it. Personally, I haven't had that many problems with it but stayed with non-BMS setups for several hardware reasons back in the day :p

If you go the BMS route, I think you may as well try later FreeFalcon releases, seeing how they actually blew off the legal issues and had the chance to further work on improving the BMS code.

The best plan - just get Falcon 4 AF. you can probably find it for $14 these days. Besides, your huge F4 manual works fine with it. You just have to read the AF changes since they implemented a real Block 50/52 cockpit with AF.

I can send you the AF manual for reading if you want it. It is in PDF form.
