Default looking for Epyx Sub Battle SImulator

Just wondering if anyone here on the forum has a copy of Sub Battle Simulator for 3.5" disks that they would be interested in selling?

Sub Battle Simulator and Action in the North Atlantic are 2 old games that i would really like to find physical copies of but both are quite hard to come by - ilook on Ebay, but i am not sure if there is some other place on the web to look for old pc games instead

I only had it on 5 1/4" floppy for the C-64. We never played it much because Silent Service was just more fun.

I have since found a 3.5 inch floppy version woot.

I have been playing Silent Service 1 and 2 more since then, both of those are really great,

Silent Service 1 though is sadly not as pretty and has terrible sound on the dos version. The amiga version of it is much better i nthis regard.

Sub Battle Simulator though i found alot easier and the missions more varied as well as their being aircraft to watch out for also. I was trying to catch up with an aircraft carrier and its escorts in one case through out the night, riding on the surface of course in the distance. Once daylight came though the carrier sent out its planes to attack me while i was still surface side, clearly group had not forgotten i was behind them following my first attempt to attack them. I like this little kinds of things and i dont i seem them in Silent Service

that i am. although it seems you can just get all of them online easily now on the various sites and even play them in a browser, i really dont like that experience, it doesnt capture the nostalgia nor the immersion.

i like the old boxes and the manuals and even figuring out how to install them from the floppy disks.

I would like to find 3.5 inch floppy versions of Silent Service 1,Up Persicope and Gato but i dont think these exist, i think they were all only 5.25.

i get as much fun out of the classic ones as i do out of newer games like SH3/5 etc

Classic sub and class naval dos games are what i am greatly enjoying atm . i just got Action Stations recently, it is surprisingly easy to play despite all the detailed elements of it, it models some unique possibilities such as if someone at the controls gets hit by debris and slumps on the wheel and causes a ship to veer in an unexpected direction

so yeah, i think the old games are extremely fun and what they lack in graphics they make up for with depth of gameplay

I'm with you, I have most of the old games and the boxes+manuals, media, and I keep a Pentium 133 machine with DOS and Win95 to run them on. Sadly, all that is still packed away for a few more years.

thats a shame that it has to be packed away, is that due to space limitations - i guess the only drawback is that a big collection of boxes needs some space in order to display them all

Can totally relate - I remember getting my copy of Red Storm Rising - that big red box brimming with keyboard overlays, the foldout guide to Russian subs and, of course, a stack of 3.5" disks all needed to hold the files that will now fit on a microSD card the size of your fingernail. I remember unpacking that thing certain that I'd never learn to play the game.

Default Epyx: Sub Battle Simulator

I remember that one - played it in the late 1980's. That was the 2nd Sub Sim game I got after "Gato"; SBS was definitely a step up. From what I recall, in Gato, you could only shoot straight ahead, so SBS was more sophisticated in allowing you to choose the gyro angle (which I had no idea how to set - most of my shots were "down the throat"). Unfortunately most of my love for the game was probably from the lack of "Silent Service II". By the time I got that game, I had less time for gaming and never learned how to play it. I played the German side more than the American side, because the Japanese shipping losses meant that later USN/PAcific patrols were less eventful than Kriegsmarine/Atlantic patrols.

Sub Battle Simulator is probably fair to say, superseded by SS2 but it does have elements in it which SS2 didnt. I love SS2 absolutely even though i am terrible at it

This being said re SS2 it has some strange setups for the tactical battle element, what i mean is that i was doing a war patrol and came across a large target and so hit yes to play it, and the battle, put my sub at surface level stationary literally directly in front of a japanese taskforce and they shot me up..all i could do was crash dive, but the depth charges rained on me and i had no chance....

SBS at least has the patrols and battles all in the same setting so it is up to you to locate and approach the target from as far away as it is that you spot them.

Default Gato 3.5" floppy

If I see that Gato floppy I will come back here and pm you. It was for a Fat Mac computer back then.
I think floppy disks do not retain data well and this is about 40 years old. Might have thrown it out a couple yrs ago.
