P.S.R. is an operational strategy that aims to minimize the ratio between railroads’ operating costs and their revenues through various cost-cutting and (ostensibly) efficiency-increasing measures. The basic idea is to transport more freight using fewer workers and railcars.

One way to do this is to make trains longer: A single 100-car train requires less track space than two 50-car ones since you need to maintain some distance between the latter. More critically, one very long train requires fewer crew members to run than two medium ones.

Another way to get more with less is to streamline scheduling so that trains are running at full capacity as often as possible.

All this has worked out poorly for rail workers writ large. Over the past six years, America’s major freight carriers have shed 30 percent of their employees. To compensate for this lost staffing, remaining workers must tolerate irregular schedules and little time off since the railroads don’t have much spare labor capacity left.

Fewer workers equals fewer safety inspections and people with eyes on rail systems. So what happens when workers are stressed out because cuts in manpower, workers strike. And the Biden administration declares it illegal and so it’s business as usual. Until a minimally manned train catches on fire and for over twenty miles nobody was aware of it. Only after it derails and the investigation is started does anyone find out.

Meanwhile Biden leaves the country figuring it’s safer in Ukraine.

Palestine, the town where the derailment occurred that spilled hazardous materials and was ignited happened in Palestine Ohio. NOT Cincinnati. The same place where fires created a plume of smoke that likely released other chemicals in and around East Palestine, the town where the accident occurred. Having had some training myself in protecting against NBC warfare that crap will carry and there stands a damn good chance of long term health problems for those downwind of that intentionally set blaze. In the name of expediency.

Just ask those soldiers still alive who passed by or were down wind of a burn pit. Maybe it’s high time public servants serve the public’s interests rather being in the pocket of railroad barons. Instead of bare minimal crews geared towards increasing profits. How about we write our representatives and demand minimum manning requirements to ensure public safety, life and property. Sure it might cut into share holder profits but so fekking what?

Though I will commend your effort, you did get the state right. 5,000 people live in Palestine, OH and may have come into direct contact with hazardous materials, others downwind may be affected too both short and long term. I suggest writing your representatives to demand standardizing manning requirements of our rail system to promote an increase public safety rather profits and you respond with MAGA and Putin stories?
