Encountered Convoy SL, course approximately 030° speed 7 knots, engaged and sank two liberty ships, two C3 Cargo ships, one Empire Merchant and Illustrious carrier. Suspect carrier fuel bunker struck, massive explosion and smoke column, carrier broke in two and sank within 2-3 minutes. Escort response was briefly inneffective and disorganized but pinned down the boat with depth charging down to 200 meters depth for 2 hours. Evaded escorts and resuming voyage to assigned patrol grid.
