National Coast Guard Museum In The Works

Heard about this proposal this morning on the front page of the Hartford Courant. Hopefully it'll go through - I didn't know until today that United States Coast Guard doesn't have an official museum. There are already a lot of maritime museums in New England, so it's not like another one would hurt! Also, it would only be a 10 minute drive from the Submarine Force Museum in Groton.

We cut the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds....and we think we can open a National Coast Guard Museum!!!!????

I found some other Coast Guard museums just doing a quick search.
This one they want costs $100 million.

Honestly within reason I see a museum as a good thing even for people actively serving.The best museum I ever saw was one that the NBC training unit in Germany had.You go there to do your yearly NBC training (excluding when you wear the gear during exercises) in their shop they had on display examples of every gas mask ever produced even the cloth ones that you urinated in from WWI.They also had horse gas masks.This planned CG one sounds a bit expensive.

Huh? Not sure I get your drift there. Are you saying that Navy and USAF display teams deserve funding and a Coast Guard museum doesn't?

The US Coast Guard is a branch of the military, and IMO a very under-appreciated one. Having known a few guys who served in the coast guard, as well as the service's history, IMO they more than deserve their own museum. The Air Force, Army and Navy all have more than one major museum. It's about time USCG got one.

I'm not cutting down the CG here...but we cut funding to stuff we already have just to spend it on something else. We're cutting stuff in the wrong places. White House tours, Military, etc.

I just don't like this.

I'm not saying that the CG doesn't deserve a museum...I'm saying that the monetary thinking behind this isn't making me happy.

The Coast Guard does some good work on and over our oceans. I respect them just as I would any other military member. They do deserve a Museum...but we shouldn't cut Air Force and Navy programs to do it.

Exhibition flying, along with the jumps like the Golden Knights, are fantastic.

However, Those are moments in time that can be repeated.
A Museum has much more value in so many ways!

Take the U-505 in Chicago.
You can NEVER walk aboard anything like that ever again should it be lost!
Sure copies could be made but that is not the same thing.
It would be like saying the Pyramid in Memphis is just as good as the Great Pyramid in Egypt.

Believe me it is NOT! And I have been inside both!

You do understand that each branch is responsible for their own budget right? That means that the USAF and US Navy chose to cut the display teams.Those programs are very expensive a museum short of initial build cost(normally funded by several means so truly a technicality ) costs relatively little to operate in comparison to what a display squadron costs.

Both the Navy and USAF chose to keep their many public museums because those combined do not even come close to the monetary requirement of a display team.

Do you have any idea how much it costs to operate the typical squadron of combat aircraft just on a monthly basis? A lot of money.My unit in Germany just a part of the support for a squadron of aircraft had a monthly allotment of $500,000.00 and that went quickly many times we had to get a little creative towards the end of the month.

That's all well and good from the visitors' point of view, but doesn't necessarily hold water when you start considering the realities. Not saying that it wouldn't work in this case: it does sound reasonable enough. Just saying that museums can't be founded just because it wouldn't hurt to have one.
