tinyMCE editor plugin

Anyone good with custom tinyMCE plugins?
Catch: version 2.x not the newer 3.x jazz.

Have a review blog using some modified plugins but I'm looking to do something of a menu button to insert text selections. As shown here in this example: http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/examples/example_18.php

I messed with it and got close but couldn't seem to make it work. I think their fine examples are for 3.x, well I don't see alot of sence to change the whole blog and have to redo all the other mods/edits just for one plugin.
