That big Peterbuilt would be awful getting in and out of NY, Boston and Philly. I created gridlock in lower Manhattan in a three-axle 1-bunk Freightliner one afternoon in '78. Parking is so tight, everyone parks to the very end of the block, disallowing any big-rig to turn the corner to get back to the only bridge outta the Big Apple. The trailer simply won't cheat through the turn. My newby co-driver and I sat 3+ hours till 5PMish until workers started driving home, with our flashers on; cops kept asking if we could move...and we heard on the radio: "...and there is gridlock in lower Manhattan..." When it comes to big rigs... size matters not luxury... and all that gadgetry just means more downtime for repairs.

Me in '78 in San Antonio,TX at 2 married college buddies' USAF officer quarters for dinner in my trukkin' days. I recall the temperature was over 100 degrees and my Freightliner's AC had gone on the fritz! Hence cutoffs while driving...That afternoon in a Union 76 truckstop at the pumps, the truck just ahead of me in the refuel line exploded two tire's simultaneously from the extreme heat...Global warming meets Big Bang Theory before it was fashionable...I opted to drive by night to get my precious load of tuna catfood outta San Diego to Chicago just to save my retread Bandags from blowing! But I had good training >

That's cool Aktung ...
Wow! you use to be young?

You sure do have lots of stories ... you should write a book if you could spell that is

I use to drive for the DOT for the post office between major post offices, but that and a school bus for Ryder was my only claim for fame.

This is what I drive now a 31' Executive RV

USA is a part of my biggest travel dream.

USA will be a detour on my world Cruise.

When the cruise ship dock in New York I would rent a huge RV and tour USA thick and thin. Then back to New York and continue my world cruise(a year later of course)

Haha, I saw that picture and instantly thought, "What the hell? What are those small children doing up in a skyscraper frame?"

I thought the same thing when I saw the Peterbilt. Old truckers never die they say, they just get their Peterbilt. I thought the big Peterbilt with extended sleeper might be better suited for episodes of " Ice Road Truckers ."

Then again, I don't think carrying that much extra weight over the Ice roads would be a good idea either. I agree the extra gadgetry isn't really needed but if staying in your truck for extended periods is part of the plan, then some comforts are nice. The Peterbilt was built for that. One thing I would want is a GPS system to navigate alternate routes and quickly find destinations.

Truck driver shortage ‘is about as bad as I’ve ever seen’
Quote:
Eric Fuller, the CEO of U.S. Xpress (USX), said that his company has doled out 30% to 35% in total pay increases over the last 12 months — but suggested more may be needed.
Hmmm... may be time to come out of retirement...

It has been reported there are in excess of 100,000 vacancies for Class 1 HGV drivers currently in the UK

Seems to be a world wide phenomena. In Denmark, Sweden, Germany and in UK there's a huge lack of truck drivers.
