Do not upgrade your boat if your game is modded, wait until your are in Kiel.

Do not make a save prior to attacking.
Manual saves should not be made within 60km of any coast line, attacker, or destroyed marks.

more
Manual saves should not be made when submerged unless it is unavoidable.
The periscope should be raised to view before making the Manual save.

I saved games with TWoS near the coast, near ports, before attack, after attack, near ships, submerged, surfaced, etc, etc; and never had a problem. Only I create a new savegame each time; never I use an autosave or overwrite a previous savegame. Ever I save in my machine and in the Ubi cloud (Uplay online). My SH5 isn´t the Steam version; I have the DVD updated to 1.2.

Regards.

Welcome to Subsim!!

Yes I agree, there was a time when you had to be careful with when and how you saved. Like the other members here, I now save when and wherever and have had absolutely no problems whatsoever.

TWoS is now a rock solid platform so you should never have save problems, except the age old one of not saving the weather conditions, which is a limitation of the game engine and cannot be modded. Just make sure you always keep the Autosave_entering_bunker at the start of every patrol so you have a recent starting point should anything go wrong and you will not lose much progress. You can also usually start the patrol again from there after TWoS updates are applied.
