U 112 was never built. So, I picked that number to have a unique boat assigned just to me :-)

So, what's this "World Map" and "Operation Spinnennetz" about, anyway?

I'll be out of school by the time your career is over!
It does indeed give you a sense of realism, I would like to do it when I am older and retired and I have a lot of time on my hands, but I am busy with school and other stuff.

December of 42 we set out for the Caribbean yet again in hopes of enjoying the last bit of hunting for the year. It was actually a really boring transit we made it a good way through the Bay of Biscay before we encountered an aircraft and it didn't seem too eager to bother us when we dived. Picked up some warships transiting the Atlantic when we did a hydrophone check near the Azores as well.

Finally made it off the coast of the Dominican Republic again but honestly it was a really boring patrol nothing was happening and it was pretty quiet. Decided to head down to Curaçao this time instead of Florida. While steaming south we caught sight of a destroyer and luckily dived before they noticed. Eventually a really nasty storm showed up when we were right outside the port which made me nervous as I couldn't pick up any patrols around well I decided to slowly slide in and take a peak. It was a massive jackpot 3 tankers in Port and not a single destroyer to be seen. Torpedoed all 3 and headed home happy and feeling like the war was going well.

Then we had our patrol in late February of 43. Oh how quickly the tables have turned already. Shortly after leaving Lorient we encountered aircraft and it was pretty much a constant game of whack-a-mole. Eventually we found a pretty good groove of avoiding aircraft and charging batteries. Encountered a lone cargo ship while charging batteries and used the deck gun to a sink her then quickly dived and slunk away a few days later found another lone cargo ship and did the same to them as well. Needless to say other than the very noticeable increase and organization of Allied aircraft it was seeming like a great patrol and figured the transit to the Caribbean would be fairly smooth. Then suddenly the closer we got to the Azores the more we seemed to be running into trouble and it was harder to predict the aircraft patrols. Eventually we got caught out charging our batteries one morning and we took heavy damage. We took down the aircraft but I decided it was better to limp home it was not worth the risk of trying to even get to our patrol zone. 43 is looking to be a ugly turn.

On a side note I'm really stoked this is the furthest I have made it in a career before. 42 was usually where I met my demise but so far I'm alive. First time I literally couldn't justify finishing a patrol and it felt weird to return with all my eels aboard. The surfacing thing is going to be my downfall played so many nuc sims I have never given it much thought but now I really to adapt as I am prey and no longer the predator.

It does a really good job of simulating it for sure. I get why so many died not just the switch in ASW tactics but without the foreknowledge of the war it would be hard to shake the hunter mentality for a lot of skippers once the tide turned. I think I just need to set expectations low and hope for a bit of tonnage but just aim for survival.

The men at the night club are saying that war is immenient and our training will be put to the test!
We await new orders from the FdU

Oblt Erich Hante, U-45, type VIIB

I have completed my first wartime patrol with outstanding results! Hans Ibbken and FdU were extremely pleased with my performance and awraded me the Iron Cross Second Class!

Here is our captains log for that patrol:

On September 1, 1939, FdU ordered us to attack the small convoy consisting of the two tankers and the two transports, we sank them with ease. We then made our way down to the Western Apporchases and sank 3 ships there, we were running low on fuel and we were nearly out of torpedoes so we decided to head back home. On our way back we encountered one last ship which we sunk with our last torpedo. We sent a status report to FdU and they ordered us back to base. We sank our last two merchants at the end of our patrol by using our deck gun.

The crew seems to be a little more saltier now, they aren't as nervous and green as they were before!
The sailors at the night club are all cheery and drunk as they spew on about how victory will surely be ours.

I awarded 6 sailors medals, 2 Iron Cross Second Classes and 4 U-boat War Badges, and I promoted 4 sailors.

We await new orders from the FdU

Signed,
Erich Hante

Kptlt Erich Hante, U-45, type VIIB

We have returned from our second patrol, another outstanding patrol that made the BdU extremely pleased with our performance. A sailor was transferred out because he was transferred to another boat, and a new came back in.

Patrol Results:
Docked on October 30, 1939
Crew losses: 0|Ships sunk: 9|Aircraft destroyed: 0|Patrol tonage: 60734 GRT/ts

The sinking of the Passenger Liner was magnificent, a flame eurpted from the ship, debris went flying everywhere, it was the most joyus part of my life. The intensity and the tension, I loved it all. The crew that has stayed with me has grown and matured a bit.

At the end of this patrol, I was promoted to Kaptäinleutnant and awarded two medals, the Iron Cross First Class and the U-boat War Badge. I awarded nearly 10 medals to my crew, four Iron Cross Second Classes, two Iron Cross First Classes, and 4 U-boat War Badges.

We await new orders from the BdU.

Signed,
Erich Hante
