Default Sewing machine engine

When surfaced and on the bridge, the engine noise sounds like a sewing machine.
I looked in the Sounds folder and listened to the engine sounds, they all seem to sound a bit rough plus I notice there is a Mix sound and that too is rough but none were like the sewing machine sound as I call it.

I was looking to substitute it for something a bit less noisy and smoother, realistic or not.

That is one of the annoying bugs in the game, seems to happen when coming out of TC. One workaround is to vary your engine speed and the sound will go back to normal.

Thanks BR, Yes I noticed that when I changed screen and went back to the bridge it had gone, I thought it was just me setup, I didn't know it was a known bug.

no problem, there are a lot of little niggly bugs like that that you just learn to live with. especially with save games. Feel free to ask, someone around here usually knows the answer.

Funny you mention saved games BR, I just had to re-install my SH4, I got a few CTD's after I tried to save a game, very annoyed because I was part way through a patrol and it took me ages to get to where I was.

save games are always a problem, even when you follow all the rules, you could still have issues.

first, before you start a campaign, you have to make sure you have a stable, CTD free mod instal, then, ideally, make no changes to your mods or game options during the campaign.

second, there are threads on "rules" to follow when saving. I always save surfaced, on the NAV map, with the game paused and ideally with no land or ships in the area.

I also save every 12 hours, at least, so that if any issues do crop, I have issue free saves I can go back to.

Thanks BR, Am I right it assuming the saved games are in the SH4 folder in MyDocuments?

Whenever I have a problem I always delete that before starting again.

Original sounds like a sewing machine whatever you do - needs real diesel sound with more bass.

Bingo!

The sound you hear on the outside of the boat is very different from what you hear in one of the Engine Rooms. Submarines do have mufflers believe it or not, so you'll get what's in the video Sniper linked. We had a FM 38N 8 1/8 which was nearly identical to what some fleet boats carried. Was awesome whenever we would snorkel pierside, unless you were the topside watch then it sucked.

and that was only two of the four!

i was up there last year to visit the Old Girl. she was looking every bit of her age. the repair crew was shooting an electrical issue and there was a problem in the forward torpedo room. unfortunately, a good portion of the boat is off limits to visitors. it is expensive to keep in repair, even for visitors. we are also running short of diesel boat seamen to maintain her.

across the lake from Silversides in Wisconsin is the Cobia. she is in much better condition, having survived half of the war patrols that Silversides did. we were able to visit the conning tower and both battery rooms. on the tour, the docent actually let visitors climb into a torpedo tube. not.for.me.

anyway, if you get an opportunity to visit either one, it is worth the money.

Yep like that. Although I see they didn't open Diesel Seawater for the exhaust.
