For all his rants and failings in many peoples opinions I steadfastly adhere to the doctrine instilled in me by my parents and the training I undertook as a LEO.....respect the position/rank even if you can't respect the individual.

Sorry for being OT in this thread. I do not want to attack you, but since this (LINK) and what happened in all those wars i would really like to know what to do in such a situation today.
I mean how can a young man - turned soldier voluntarily or by force - know whether what his superior demands from him violates some international law? It could also be a reprisal for something the soldier does not know about, or a war crime.
For what i read he has to obey, and the superior may get a reprimand or be court-martialed later, but this does not help in the moment "it" is happening. This is not easy, or a question that can be evaded.
edit from my miltary days it was self evident to do what is ordered for "you do not see the whole situation".

I believe all actions of any kind have consequences in one shape or form, sometimes multiples of.

During my service years I was always aware of the above and if ordered to carry out a certain action it was my responsibility whether to question said order or not.

If you blindly follow orders without reasoning it out yourself before performing said action then you take the potential consequences that may ensue.

Perhaps not the best analogy but the best I can think of at the present time.....take out an insurance policy and the insurer takes on the risk. Don't take out an insurance policy and you take on the risk.
