Default thought that in the end he saved me, but the incredible happened!

Simple mission Battle of Balikpapan 1942 Salmon type submarine. Objectives: sink the invading fleet's flagship battleship, and the euphemism: "face the enemy fleet." The map showed miles and miles of shallow water, the worst where navigating at periscope depth barely a meter from keel to bottom. It was night and I tried to make that journey by sailing on the surface, but the intense activity of warships forced me to sail submerged at 1/3. When I got to the area where the invasion fleet was anchored, the batteries were already at 50%, and that seemed like a bad omen. It had dawned and some sunken ships could be seen that partially protruded from the water, and among them a number of anchored merchant ships were quite far apart, which were like fairground targets. I started torpedoing them one by one, at an average distance of 3,000 yards, and managed to sink 4 of 4,800 tons. When I was on the fifth a destroyer appeared, at that moment I had to sneak into deeper waters, but I tried to get closer to my fifth victim. In the end I decided to leave, because the battery level was dangerously low but then another warship appeared. I saw a sunken ship nearby and headed towards it, intending to stand next to it and thus try to confuse its sonars. Perhaps in reality this ploy would have worked, but in the world of this game I backfired. I stayed still and glued to the shipwreck for hours, only to see that more warships kept appearing, by nightfall there were already six and they danced around me without stopping shining their reflectors. I had to venture out at 2 knots in total silence, but they chased and attacked me mercilessly. Believing I was lost, I stayed at the bottom, playing dead. They threw loads at me and even damaged equipment that I didn't have, like the radar. They finally left !!! Did they think they killed me?
The Hydrophone indicated movement of ships moving far away. With the batteries down to 25% and the air inside the sub so heavy that it could be cut with a knife, I surfaced and started a sprint into deep water. It seemed that I was going to make it but suddenly a blinding light came on just ahead of the bow, there was a Japanese destroyer stopped on my escape route! I was coming at full speed so I did not have time to avoid the collision that occurred, they shot me with everything and I could not answer the fire because some intelligent man put the gun from the deck aft instead of putting it forward.
I did not want to see the end and I left the game. Was the encounter with the destroyer by chance? or was she waiting for me?

there is a technique in the game where an escort will go doggo and just sit in the vicinity of the action. totally still. perhaps the designers are taking advantage of the fact that your hydrophones cannot detect a motionless surface vessel.
this usually happens when you attack a convoy/TF and there is more than one escort.
after you attack, the escorts will try and locate you directly and kill you. if you evade that counterattack, all but one escort will round up the remaining escorted ships and get them back on course. one escort will remain behind, totally inert, waiting for you to surface or at least show yourself.
the IJN escorts do it in the Pacific and when you go and play the Dark Waters megamod, the Brits will do the same thing.
you have to be careful after an attack.

a best practice is to make your attack, firing as many of your loaded torpedoes as you can bring to bear and then scuttle off at a 90 degree course to reload. at least 6 or 7 NM from the attack area before surfacing. beware of trailing escorts!
this practice also has the advantage of allowing you to exit the immediate vicinity and any waiting, silent, motionless escorts.
then, if you wish to attack the remnants of the enemy formation, you speed ahead to get in front of it, and attack again.

In "Torpedo Run" an admiral referred to the Japanese as "those crafty devils". Was it pure bad luck to find that destroyer blocking my way, or was it deliberate?

as i explained in my previous post, other Kaleuns have experienced the same behaviour as you did, therefore it must be part of the DD/DE AI.
