Default Tuning game for surface action?

I'm new here, but just recently stumbled on the OM mod for SH4, and now have installed OM and it's patches, OMEGU and the Admiral Scheer for OM. I love these mods, and I really enjoy surface naval warfare, and want to tune up SH4 (if possible) for this. I would like to play as the Admiral Scheer in missions and campaigns.

The trouble I'm having is a disparity between my crew's detection and firing vs. the AIs. For example, in the quick mission where you are supposed to sink the HMS Barham (3 QE class battleships) my crew detects the ships visually at about 14,000 yards and will fire on the BBs at 11,000 yards. Meanwhile, the AI BBs will not fire on me until about 6700 yards. This means I get a lot of unopposed shots in on the enemy before they fire back.

Is there any way I can adjust the AI detection and firing range so that this is more realistic? I would rather enemy BBs fire on me and take me out (like they would have in real life) at distance than them waiting until they are real close before going after me.

Hi. You need to adjust the Sim.cfg file located in your data/cfg folder. Adjust this line (in orange) to a higher value, like perhaps 11,000:

[AI Cannons]
Max error angle=5 ;[deg]
Max fire range=6000 ;[meters]
Max fire wait=12 ;[s]

And if you need to adjust the AI ships to have better surface detection, adjust these numbers:

[Visual]
Detection time=3 ;[s] min detection time.
Sensitivity=0.01 ;(0..1) at (sensitivity * max range) we have a double detection time.
Fog factor=0.3 ;[>=0]
Light factor=15.0 ;[>=0]
Waves factor=1.0 ;[>=0]
Enemy surface factor=1.5 ;[m2]
Enemy speed factor=0 ;[kt]
Thermal Layer Signal Attenuation=0.1

[Radar]
Detection time=15 ;[s]
Sensitivity=0.03 ;(0..1)
Waves factor=0.5 ;[>=0]
Enemy surface factor=0.03 ;[m2]
Aspect=0.8 ;[>=0]
Thermal Layer Signal Attenuation=0.1

Thanks for the reply. I'm running this by the way:

OM705
OM705_720
OMEGU_V300
OMEGU_V300_Patch5A
AdmiralScheer_forOM102
AdmiralScheer_forOM102 Patch

I found the sim.cfg file you are talking about, and messed with the

Max fire range=20000 ;[m]

and it doesn't seem to have any effect. Also, the main game files have a sim.cfg and so do the OM and OM Patch mods. Which one do I edit?

On the detection area, what values need to be modified there (and to what number)?

1. uninstall AS_for_OMv102_Patch1
2. Copy the Cfg directory from OMv705_to_V720\Data\ to AS_for_OMv102_Patch1
3. using wordpad edit Sim.cfg
4. Change the following values in the file to equal the items in red

[AI Cannons]
Max error angle=5 ;[deg]
Max fire range=20000 ;[m]
Max fire wait=12 ;[s]

[Visual]
Detection time=3 ;[s] min detection time.
Sensitivity=0.001 ;(0..1) at (sensitivity * max range) we have a double detection time.
Fog factor=0.03 ;[>=0]
Light factor=1.0 ;[>=0]

Reinstall AS_for_OMv102_Patch1

WARNING

If you are going to play the normal Uboat missions in OM, you "MUST" de-install this patch

I really appreciate your help with this. I went through your steps, and now the BBs fire on me at 5 nm, or about 10,000 yards. This is a lot closer to the 11,000 yards I fire at, but I would like to up that a little bit more. Can the detected AI range be increased a little more?

On a side note, Hood fired at Bismarck at 25,000 yards. That is realistic but a little too extreme for this game as you wouldn't even be close to seeing each other in game when firing.

Since I love surface warfare even more than sub, I don't care if these values screw up sub missions right now.
