Default Help finding a new Navy sim game

Hello everyone.

It's been ages since I last posted. I think the last time I was active was back during the prime of Dangerous Waters.
I've been itching to get back into a PC Sub/Navy sim, but I'm pretty out of the loop as far as to what has happened with this genre.

Has anything new been released, indie or otherwise, that is worth picking up and playing these days? Have the old games been perfected with mods now? Does DW/Harpoon even run anymore on Windows 8 machines?

Thanks for all your feedback!

Both Harpoon Classic and Harpoon 3 versions will run on Win8 machines.

Well, speaking only for myself, after having solved some nasty computer issues, I am getting ready to start another SH4 career.

Same here, SH4, RFB, and a campaign mod from the Pacific Thunder Campaign.

aanker, if you don't mind, could you list the mods, and order you are going to use? I am trying to decide on the appropriate mods to use with RFB 2.0.

Since RFB addresses the submarine in its scope, I use their configuration that is slightly modified, but mostly only hand edited the upc's, specifically CareerStart & flotillas, - and I think one more 'conflict' - UPCLocalization.tsr.

I use a different keyboard configuration too.

Recently someone wanted to use Vickers03 Pampanito interior with RFB so I edited the sims for that, uploaded them here, and I'm using it too because I also like it. Variety is the spice of life. It was made for TMO initially.

Also I'm using the campaign layers from "The Pacfic Thunder Campaign" aka the PTC made by Ed Howard because all missions were researched and are historically accurate. No more Recons that never happened. My Sofu Gan mod is in it, Carotio's Panama Canal mod, plus missions I helped research including one conducted by SS-203 USS TUNA at Sanbergelap Island - the Dev's actually (and probably accidentally ;) put this tiny 6 pixel or so island in the game!

Side note and interesting to me was the TUNA's CO patrol report didn't mention this mission but it is listed in other war documents and details can be gleaned from the distance possible to sail in a day. He is sneaky and one can follow his patrol and discover the false lat & long reporting to hide this mission, then he sails back to Pearl where TUNA changes CO's. This was the 'silent service' after all - and still is... lol
Quote:
Examples from the actual report which conflicts with Roscoe (of course):
(A) PROLOGUE.
... "Commander J. T. Hardin, USN, relieved Lt Cdr A. H. Holtz, USN as Commanding Officer." ...

The 9th war patrol report of USS TUNA - Nov 43:

Nov 14:
1200 Position 5d-07'S, 117d-12'E puts him in the vicinity and within sailing distance of
Sanbergelap Island +/-.

Also the 4th remark in the first endorsement mentions a successful special mission .... which is an interesting lead/remark and adds to the evidence.

I love this kind of research and it is reflected in the careful attention to detail that Ed put into the PTC mod.

I am also using my clean map mod that removes the objective stars' clutter once the missions are completed so they aren't in the way.

I'm debating whether to edit the surface and submerged ranges. Should be able to patrol @ 15 knots, not 10, and get 100 nm @ 3 knots submerged in a fleetboat. I haven't examined RFB ranges that close yet.

So, that is my 'rough' configuration I'm using with RFB.

Ed Howard has modified the campaign mod and it is a little different from the mod I use, also renamed it, and he has it available on his site as: "the Guerrilla Submarines Spyron Mod". It has a user license - it isn't 'freeware' it is freely available though.

Sorry I don't have a JSGME list...... I edit as I go.

Happy Hunting!

Yes, I understand. You have obviously put a lot of effort into your game.

That's one hell of a mod list! On that topic, what is RFB?
