Default AOD to run on 98 se help

command runs fine on 98 se. i picked up AOD cd on ebay to try it. it loads fine but wont run. any help would be great thanks.

There's two versions of Aces of the Deep floating around Ebay. Which one
works on Win98 SE depends on if you got the original DOS version or
the later Command:Aces of the Deep. Command:Aces of the Deep should
run fine as long as you don't have an SBLive sound card. The original
DOS version only runs in a pure DOS enviroment, DOS 3.3 or higher would
run it.

i have both. CAOD runs fine but cant get AOD to work .i dont no what im doing thats the thing. dos is new to me . it is a later mybe even the last cd version they made it is 95 win compatable thanks

I have the first version with the expansion disk and the only way I can
get that to work is by rebooting the computer with a boot disk. Even
then there is no sound. I'm running Win98 OEM.

Well, if you ever upgrade to XP, then download DOSBOX. It's a free DOS emulator that will run old games like AOD directly from XP. That's how I am running AOD DOS.

I have tried both AOD and CAOD. On the whole, I think the graphics are better for AOD and you get varied engine pitch sounds.

DOSBOX also gives you the Sound Blaster emulation so that you will have sound.

The sound given it's age was quite well done for AOD. The combined sounds of destroyer props beating the water overhead, the pinging of ASDIC, and your sonar man screaming "Depth charges in the water!" really adds much to the atomosphere.

click start then restart in msdos mode
when it gets to the C:\ promt type "mouse" it should say a mouse ver.
then if that works type "set" then look for a line that says something
like this "Blaster =220 I7 D1 P330 T6" if it shows that then you'll
have sound. next type "D:\" then hit enter. if this shows the D promt
then your cdrom works if it don't then the drive letter is wrong or its
not loaded in dos mode. You could always copy the sounds from the cd to
aces directory then they would work but the intro movie won't
if all this works then type
cd\dynamix\aodcd <enter>
aod <enter>

thanks for yur help guys iv decided to try learn both ways d box and getting it to run on 98will try roys way fisrt .could yu tell me please as regards to command aces when running in 98 why when ever i use the scope or glasses the game speeds up for a second. i v lost a lot of tonage because of this. thanks again gary

mark i have taken a real liking to the original aces even though i havnt played it yet and am hangin to get it runing with sound an all looking through these forums i no that yur keen on it as well.early this year i picked up a brand new shay addams aces of the deep players guide and have been studying that 4 use with command aces though it refers to the original copy .gary

Yes, I have that guide book. It's pretty good.

I got CAOD off of E-bay. Two things are required to make it run:

(1) An integrated sound card or a sound card in an ISA slot.

(2) Less than 512Mb RAM.

Number #2 is pretty easy to accomplish with Win98 SE on newer machines, since you can reduce RAM in the System.ini file. (In fact Win98 SE has problems if you try to run with over 512Mb.) However, in XP there is no way to reduce RAM beyond messing with your hardware.

However, I finally did get COAD running with some sound bugs by using a trial copy of MS Virtual PC 2004 under Windows XP Pro SP2 where I had Windows 98 SE installed as a virtual machine. This allowed memory to be adjusted through the virtual machine and I had sound, but it was somewhat inconsistant.

I did observe exactly what you described when switching screens in the game. A brief speedup as you arrived in each screen. I suspect that the game's clock gets thrown off as the screens are switched and then it accelerates to resync the clock when the new screen is rendered.

Anyway, XP with DOSBOX does not exhibit that problem.

Another thing which I like about the XP/DOSBOX approach:

You can configure DOSBOX so that AOD continues to run while minimized and you will still have sound too. Thus, I can flip to my captain's log I keep in MS Word or read my mail and listen to the game at the same time.

The sound has always been inconsistant, even when running CAOD in a
pure DOS enviroment. The speeding up of the simulation is meant to
represent the passage of time as you switch stations. It happens wether
you use the hotspots on the screen or the menus. It's all part of the
atmosphere that makes CAOD what it is. I don't think I've ever had
an attack solution blown because of the effect.

oh thats interesting cos i first seen caod played on an old pc ,486 an 95win it never seemed to do it. i just thought it was a bug.i never thought of it as part of the sim. thanks.
