Default Weak deck gun?

I'm playing Wolves of Steel.

I unload 10 or more shells from the deck gun into a fishing boat before it sinks.

The second fishing boat I don't even go through 2 clips of the flak gun and it blows to pieces.

Why is the deck gun so weak?

Yeah...I agree....I alway use the flack gun on the fishing boats.
I have the 105mm deck gun and lately, I only allow the gun crew to fire at close range and use the flack gun to suppress any light weapons that they fire. Otherwise you seem to use just about all your deck gun ammo on one small coastal ship!

EDIT: I seem to have lost my "ACE OF THE DEEP..SUBSIM NAVY" thingy somewhere....have to go and try to find another one

Weak? You can sink large steamed with it in a few minutes, not so weak to me...It's not about the deck gun, it's probably about zon file settings of small ships which are there only for "feeling" , not for tonnage gathering of airplane annoyed captains...

Yup I always manually operate the deck gun also. SH5 deck gun is a lot harder to aim than SH3 though, but I pretty much have the hang of it now.

I just think it's crazy how I put 10 deck gun rounds into a fishing boat and it keeps chugging along but I put two magazines of AAA into it and it sinks.

Oh well.

The deck gun in SH5 is very effective, you can easily sink a large merchant or even troop transport with it in a few minutes. Remember to always operate the deck gun manually, or your crew will waste most of your rounds.

Also, if you upgrade your gunner to a maximum level the gun will have incredible firerate, making it even more powerful.

The ever important question! Valid in all forms of firearms!

Where are you aiming?

Here is a interesting excerpt from the book "Steel Boat Iron Hearts: A U-boat Crewman's Life Aboard U-505" regarding the use of the deck gun.

Name: Thomas McKean
Type: Steam merchant (Liberty)
Tonnage: 7,191 tons
Completed: 1942 - Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards Inc, Baltimore MD
Owner: Calmar SS Co Inc, New York
Homeport: Baltimore
Date of attack: 29 Jun 1942
Nationality: American

Quote:
Although the "Thomas McKean" had developed a heavy list to port, she stubbornly refused to sink.

Rather than waste another torpedo, the skipper ordered our deck gun crew to finish her off with cannon fire.

The gun crew aimed at the waterline, but the slowly listing ship kept lifting the shell holes above the water.

It took 80 rounds from our powerful 105mm gun before the flaming ship finally rolled over and sank.

Kapitänleutnant Löwe was a former gunnery officer, and he was obviously frustrated with the number of shells it took to sink her.

Typically I aim for the waterline.

Definitely takes a lot more rounds to sink a ship in SH5 than SH3.

You'd be lucky to sink 2 or 3 in SH5 before you run out of ammo. In SH3 I could sink entire convoys.

In the other hand, deck gun in SH5 reloads 3 times faster than in SH3.

That is true, although I find ammo is the limit, I don't find rof to be an issue, if I engage with the deck gun it's because there's no threat to me and I have all the time in the world. But yeah if rounds had more impact we wouldn't need to unload all of it.

Personally I never really felt the deck gun was underpowered, but I've never really tried to sink a ship with the anti-air guns either .

Lüth used almost all of his deck gun ammo trying to sink one freighter.

Suhren considered the weapon useless, at least in the Atlantic.

I installed Critical Hits V1.2 and the deck gun is much more powerful. Probably a bit over-powered, but it's more in line with SH3.

Most merchants seem to sink with 10-15 shots now.

Before it was pretty ridiculous before - you'd put 20 shots into a freighter and it might have a couple of camp fires burning on deck. But you'd put two clips of AAA fire up and down the hull and the whole ship would be burning from one end to the other.
