Yeah, my old man told me similar stories many years back.

He was in the merchant navy at the ripe old age of 14/15 having lied about his age. Seeing the Spanish Civil War as a rehearsal for the much bigger one to come in 39.

Luckily, he was never on one of the ships that were sunk during the war.
