Default Noob question

I have 3ds max and would like to open a 3d file to start modeling but after installing and running 3ditor I can't figure out which files hold the 3d files. The dat files? I open a dat file and there are no 3d objects, just texture files, dds and tga files. Objects > conning towers dat files, submarine > dat files, I only get texture files and hex.

The files you're looking for are the .dat files inside the /sea/whatevership folders. There lie the main 3D models of the ships.

Opening a .dat file with S3D will give you a window like this one

Notice the arrow pointing at the main node of the ship and the Model Preview tab that will allow you to see the main 3D model. This main node could have multiple smaller 3D models for parts of the ship like funnels and masts, propellers and rudders, etc..

All nodes are numbered, and you can see that in node number 2 of that Yamato is the main 3D model. If you get into it, it'sll give you the option to export it, usually in .obj format which can be edited by most 3D edition programs. Collada's .dae format is also allowed (but I've never used it, so I can't be more specific than that).

Hope this helps you with the basics. The submarines, conning towers, libraries etc work the same way.

Thank you. There are "tones" of ships but where are the submarine models?

The airplanes are in the Air folder, ships are in the Sea folder, and submarines are in the Submarine folder.

Just like pointed out to you above by JapLance, you need to click on that ">* 5: Node NSS_Salmon" to select it, then click on the blue text "Model Preview", which is a link to the 3D image. You could then select the "4: Node..." that should be below the "5: Node...", and find the "Export 3D model" link for use in a 3D program. You may or may not have to select more nodes to export different "parts" of the 3D model...

Now, for most of the submarines, you will find the sail, or conning tower, or turm (pick your term... sorry, bad joke won't happen again until the next time) - but you'll find all of those in the Objects folder. Also, be sure and browse through the "Library" folder for guns and other paraphernalia used in the game...

You are welcome. Notice those little yellow and blue dots. Those are mount points for "equipment", such as the term, or the deck gun, or a water spray, etc. Most of those will have corresponding links in other files, such as a deck gun mount node on the submarine deck, that node's ID will be used as the link in the Library USSubParts Deck_Gun_Xx file (the "Xx" being the actual gun desired). There are sim files for the sub which controls the gun mount (using the ID for linking), and another for the gun itself that further controls the gun. Then there's the ammunition used in the gun... There is also an eqp file in the sub folder, and that has the "name" used in the Deck_Gun_Xx file to name the gun and the dates that it is valid... It's worse than a spider web. More like a maze of spider webs...
