The Neuer Zürcher Zeitung writes on the changes in the pharma industry:
-----------------

The corona crisis has the pharmaceutical multinationals at a loss

Many leading drug manufacturers only play an outsider role in the fight against the pandemic. This is symptomatic of the more difficult situation facing Big Pharma.

In the coming weeks vaccination should finally move forward in large parts of Europe. If the forecasts of the manufacturers and the individual countries are to be believed, larger volumes of cans should gradually become available. -

The stars among the providers are Moderna and Biontech, of all things, two biotechnology companies that hardly anyone in the pharmaceutical industry knew before the outbreak of the pandemic. In 2019, the two companies combined did not even have $ 200 million in sales. They were thus tiny - in a drug market, the total turnover of which is now around 900 billion dollars. -

Billions for Biontech and Moderna -

According to estimates by financial analysts, they now have revenues of $ 27 billion. Another 20 billion could be added in 2022. An estimated total of $ 25 billion in profit will remain in their coffers this year and next. -

How did two young companies that had previously made losses year after year manage to go from beggar to king, so to speak? Moderna and Biontech undoubtedly benefited from the fact that, since their founding eleven and thirteen years ago, respectively, they have focused on vaccines based on messenger RNA technology, which has since become so superior. All they had to do was direct the focus of their work towards a new disease. As young companies with structures that were barely stuck, it was also possible for them to react quickly and flexibly. The priorities were quickly set and everything was subordinated to the development of a vaccine against Sars-CoV-2. -

The companies also cleverly used the possibility of digitization and, in particular, artificial intelligence to accelerate clarifications and to be able to set up clinical studies more quickly. Billions in government grants, primarily from the USA, as well as extensive advance orders from numerous countries ensured that there was no lack of financial leeway. This enabled the companies not only to press ahead with their research activities at full speed, but also - at the same time - to invest large amounts of money in advance in setting up production at specialized third-party companies. -

Sanofi and Merck & Co. lagging behind -

Previously leading providers in the vaccine business had a much harder time in comparison. It is difficult to judge from the outside what the reason was. Was it just bad luck that, with the French group Sanofi and the US group Merck & Co., two representatives of Big Pharma were thrown back early on in a decisive match? This may have been a factor, but it is very likely that long decision-making processes, which are typical for large drug manufacturers, prevented the heavyweights of the industry from getting off to a quick start. -

US group Pfizer was luckier than Sanofi and Merck & Co. However, the company, which has already happily promised its shareholders this year's sales of at least fifteen billion dollars from the corona vaccination business, acts primarily as a partner of Biontech. Pfizer researchers helped bring the vaccine development quickly over the home straight, but the crucial preparatory work had been done in the laboratories of the Mainz-based biotechnology company. -

Beatings for AstraZeneca -

The pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca managed, like the US multinational Johnson & Johnson, to successfully smuggle its vaccine through the approval process, at least in the EU. The British-Swedish company has not won any laurels for this - on the contrary. Reports of very rare but serious side effects have had a detrimental effect on the image of the product. In addition, the management had to listen to sharp criticism from European capitals because delivery promises were not kept. -

At the beginning of the pandemic a good year ago, the heads of many pharmaceutical companies were still hopeful that they would be able to provide solutions to quickly alleviate the situation. It is true that hardly any large drug manufacturers dared to develop vaccines that were not already prominent or - like AstraZeneca - at least marginally active in the vaccine business. However, most pharmaceutical companies screened their portfolios for active ingredients that can possibly also be used against Covid-19. However, none of these attempts brought a resounding success. The world is still eagerly waiting for therapeutics that can be used widely and as cheaply as possible. -

Late insight at Novartis -

As far as the vaccine business is concerned, various pharmaceutical multinationals now see themselves in the unfamiliar position of merely acting as suppliers. The Basel group Novartis, for example, works as a bottler for Biontech. The realization of having to make a contribution to the faster production of the Covid-19 vaccines came late. For a long time the industry seemed to think that this could be left to contract manufacturers like Lonza. Novartis published the announcement of its cooperation with Biontech at the end of January 2021. Sanofi, Bayer, Merck & Co. and GlaxoSmithKline only announced in the past three months that they would support manufacturers of the currently most promising vaccines. -

However, one or the other pharmaceutical company should have come to the conclusion that it doesn't hurt to have at least one foot in the door in the business with the new types of vaccines. In particular, vaccines based on messenger RNA technology are predicting a golden future by a growing number of market observers. It is hoped that they could also be used in cancer treatment in particular. -

The vaccine business is becoming more attractive -

Before the pandemic, the vaccination business was spurned by large parts of the pharmaceutical industry. Only four providers (GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, Merck & Co., Sanofi) shared 80 percent of the market. The verdict was that the price pressure was too strong (mainly because of the large number of vaccinations given primarily to children in populous emerging and developing countries) and the production process was too complex. But viewed in a new light, vaccines appear much more attractive. With vaccines against cancer, providers would have significantly more pricing power than with vaccines against polio, mumps or measles. In connection with Sars-CoV-2, business with so-called boosters is also considered lucrative. These boosters, which are supposed to help ward off future mutations of the virus, are likely to be significantly more expensive than the basic vaccinations currently being administered. -

Increasing income from the marketing of vaccines would also be convenient for the pharmaceutical industry insofar as other growth areas are rare. The drug manufacturers are faced with the challenge that numerous important therapeutic areas such as the treatment of rheumatic diseases, multiple sclerosis or diabetes hardly promise any increasing income due to the growing influence of copycat products. -

Biotech companies are more innovative -

Business with cancer drugs and - related to this - with the treatment of rare diseases are still showing the growth potential. However, in this area, as has now also been shown with the corona vaccines, primarily smaller biotech companies instead of the large pharmaceutical companies stand out. Despite lower research budgets, they seem to be able to produce innovations much better. It is significant that of the 17,500 new drugs that were being developed around the world at the beginning of last year, only five percent came from Big Pharma - in 2010 it was fourteen percent. -

It also fits that the large pharmaceutical manufacturers are increasingly dependent on the help of smaller providers if they want to bring new drugs onto the market. Now only about 50 percent (instead of 80 percent as ten years ago) of their newly approved products come from their own laboratories. Everything else is due to acquisitions or collaborations. - Financial markets react negatively Many pharmaceutical companies have to put up with the accusation of relying primarily on the preservation of vested rights. The industry has made it into the habit of imposing high annual price increases in its main sales market, the USA, for old but still patented preparations and to defend itself against competition from generics with all legal means. -

This defensive strategy contributes to a negative perception that is increasingly being carried over to the financial markets. The Nasdaq Biotechnology Index, the most important barometer of the biotechnology industry for investors, has long since recovered from the stock market crash in March last year. This cannot be said of the shares of most of the major pharmaceutical companies. -

Better slim than cumbersome -

Investors seem to have realized that drug providers with lean structures promise more chances of success. In fact, the marketing of modern cancer drugs, which are mostly tailored to specific patient groups, no longer needs a large sales apparatus. And the production can also be delegated to third-party companies - just like with the vaccines. -

The market capitalizations of Moderna and Biontech have meanwhile risen sharply since the first success reports of the two companies on the vaccine front. They now reach over $ 60 billion and more than $ 30 billion. If a big pharma representative should come up with the idea of launching a takeover offer, he would have to dig deep into his pocket.

As the vaccination proceed the number of death will decrease.

Especially in the States.

Number of infected my be status quo and decreasing slowly.

India will be on the UK international travel red list from 04:00 BST on Friday.

Delhi begins week-long lockdown after a weekend curfew failed to halt record spike in cases overwhelming health services.

India has had over 200,000 cases a day since 15 April - with 1,620 new deaths reported on Sunday.

Health officials investigating whether India variant might spread more easily and evade vaccines.

103 cases of the variant have been found in the UK, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said.

UK PM Boris Johnson has cancelled his planned trip to India next week.

More than 10 million UK adults have had two doses of a vaccine.

UK records its lowest number of daily Covid deaths since 7 September - four - and 2,963 new confirmed cases.

In Portugal, shopping centres have reopened for the first time in two months in most areas, and all pupils are now back in school. The government is easing a lockdown imposed in mid-January. Back then Portugal was among the worst-hit countries in Europe. Cafes and restaurants can serve customers indoors too now, while restricting numbers.

In Switzerland restaurants have reopened outdoor terraces and people can return to the gym. It is seen as a calculated gamble by the government, as infections are still rising, and there is some opposition from scientists and the general public. Infections are rising fairly slowly and vaccinations are speeding up.

Turkey had its highest daily death toll from Covid on Sunday – 318, with 55,800 new infections in 24 hours, officials said. The total infected in Turkey in the pandemic has risen to nearly 4.3m

Germany’s infection rate nationally has risen to 165 per 100,000 people across seven days, the RKI medical centre says. A national emergency brake – meaning tighter lockdown measures – kicks in when the rate passes 100.

Scotland's first minister confirms the most significant changes to the nation's Covid restrictions since it went back into lockdown just after Christmas.

Pubs, restaurants, gyms and non-essential shops will reopen on Monday.

In Wales, six people from up to six different households will be allowed to meet outside again from Saturday.

UK PM Boris Johnson is to hold a Downing Street press briefing at 17:00 BST

From Friday, India will be on the UK international travel "red" list amid fears over a new variant.

Its addition to the list may be too late as a new variant in India is "more transmissible", warns former UK chief scientific adviser Mark Walport.

A review of policing says officers sometimes struggled to enforce lockdown restrictions because of a lack of clarity from ministers.

Austria is to oversee the distribution of 651,000 Pfizer/BioNTech doses to six countries in the Western Balkans as part of an EU scheme. Serbia already has a successful rollout so many of the doses will go to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Macedonia and Albania. Bosnia has the lowest vaccination coverage in Europe. Some of the doses will go to Kosovo and Montenegro.

Denmark is already using a corona pass to allow people to enter hairdressers and beauty salons, but now France has adapted a mobile phone app to enable people to travel to other French territories such as Corsica and Reunion. The TousAntiCovid (everyone against Covid) app can now be updated to show a negative Covid test or proof of vaccination. Travellers will still be allowed to provide their documents on paper.

All eyes in the Netherlands will be on the government’s evening press conference where a cautious relaxation of Covid measures is on the cards. The cabinet is expected to agree to reopening café and bar terraces under strict rules and an end to a controversial overnight curfew.

The EU’s medicines agency is set to announce the conclusion of its investigation into the safety of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine today. It’s reviewed four cases of rare blood clots, one of them fatal. The decision is significant as many EU countries have build the vaccine into their rollout.

French underwear shops have found a novel way of protesting against continued lockdown restrictions. Eight independent stores have sent Prime Minister Jean Castex some lingerie in a symbolic but humorous protest, complaining that it’s not their stores where Covid is circulating.

Students aged under 18 in Slovenia will get vaccinated ahead of their final exams -17,000 students are due to take final exams from next month but fewer than 3,000 have registered for vaccinations so far.

The vaccine by AstraZeneca will get renamed as "Vaxzevria" in some weeks.

It seems the company is not happy with its selfmade image and wants to play another deception card...

Quote:
“The psychological effect of getting the virus after a year of being very, very careful and getting vaccinated got to me,” Gessen, 54, said in an interview with Kaiser Health News. “It took me about three weeks to feel back to normal.”
Yeah, that's me, I can imagine that. It always felt like the sensible and patriotic thing to do, be careful and make the necessary sacrifices to slow the spread. I passed on a lot of social activity last year, if not me, who? and now that I am fully vaccinated, I have resumed normal activities. But at the tail end of last year I had some worry that after all my care, it would be hell to catch it and spend a month in the hospital.

Neal, the main effect of the vaccines so far seems to be that they do not necessarily prevent infection, but prevent "infection" translating into "serious case, hospitalization, (death)". In Germany there is for exmaple currently a wave of infections in a careteking home for the elder who all are vaccinated since weeks and months. The point is none of them is seriously ill where before most of them would have gotten hospitalized and many would have died.

We will most likely, need additional jabs later on. And then yearly jabs for new mutations.

Boost your immune system, guys. Mankind deals with virusses since millenia. 8% of our genome is form virusses. Strengthen it with nutrition and nutrients, modulate it so that it produces less inflammatory and more non-inflammatory zytokines. Reduce silent inflammation in your body by reducing inflammatory fat consumption (Omega 6). Take control of your overweight if you have any, and your existing health conditions where existent, and your diabetes if you have it.

Every such measurement shifts chances and probabilities in your favour a bit.

Be sceptical on the established eating and nutrition recommendations. Most of what they say most likely will make you sick - and the food industry smile over its profits.

Take control of your health. Learn to question your doctors. They are just humans. They are no know-it-alls. They are victims of the paradigms they had to submit to when they were students. Precondition for that is that you get some education on health and eating yourself - preferrably from outside the existing medical institutions' paradigms - because all too often these are highly problematic.

Thats why I opened up that "healt" thread. To get you started. It is not "complete" and never will be. But its a start for your journey.
