Default Does the angle of the target ship affect speed taking.

Hi

When you are 90° to a target you have the whole length of the ship as described in the recognition manual to take an accurate timed reading with your stopwatch.

But if a ship is at say 40° then is it as accurate? You are not seeing the whole length of the ship side on, but more of a squashed view. So surely a speed measurement would not be accurate. Or am I a wrong?

Thanks

Even at angle on bow less than 90, the target will still take the same amount of time to traverse your bearing line. The only way it would take less time is if the target were actually moving sideways. So therefore, speed by the fixed wire method as you describe will still work; however, the concern is at smaller angles on bow like that that it’s tough to distinguish the exact time when the bow and stern cross the line.

Hachiman, you seem to have Playboy as Steamname. As this question is virtually identical to this thread:

I (Valen) already responded to it.

I will add that if you are dragging the line of the periscope sideways with your own speed and looking to your side then the AOB of the target will play a part in the correction. Then to correct the measurement you need to add or subtract the value of ownspeed*sin(periscope angle)/sin(AOB). Adding if your bow is pointing in the direction the target is moving. Subtracting if your bow is moving to the opposite direction the target is moving.
