I think it's a game played near the front line during WW1 by British troops.

Nope Big hint: 10 days later, Donald Bell of Newcastle United was killed in the same disaster(at Bells Redoubt). He'd been awarded the Victoria Cross (posthumously-on display at Manchester's National Football Museum) for his grenade toss 5 five days beforehand. He was the only Pro footballer so honored. He was not however associated with the famous balls of 'The Great European Cup' depicted in this puzzle.

BINGO! Capt.'Billy' Nevill

purchased four soccer balls: one labeled the "great european cup" and another"no referee" to boost moral; and was observed leading his men over the top, kicking one of the balls himself well into no-man's-land to lead the company of East Surry towards the German trenches a mile away. In Britain Nevill became a national hero standing for courage and strength of character, whilst in Germany his act was regarded as British madness.

The Battalion advanced kicking the balls as the machine guns opened up. Both he and 2nd Lt G.H.S. Musgrove,

along with other officers and ranks, were killed on the first day of the Somme among 20,000 other troops KIA.

Hand to hand fighting went on for a long time in the German trenches and news received that both Captain Flatau and Pearce had been killed and later it was known that Captain Neville Lieuts, Soames, Musgrove, and 2/Lieuts Kelly and Evans had also been killed.

A prize was offered, but never paid, by Capt. Nevill to whoever reached the trenches first. A day later, two balls were recovered in the Potsdammers trenches and returned to England.
