Default Subsim Nut!

I guess I'll treat this as an alcoholics anonymous meeting:

Ahoy all, my name is coffeeandwargames, and I have a subsim problem.

I've seen Das Boot so much that I've memorized nearly every line (in German)! In fact, that movie inspired me to study German in college and I now work as a translator so I suppose submarines have had a profound influence on my life.

I was in college when SH3 came out and I played it religiously. At the time when SH4 came out, I was not interested in the Pacific theater at all (shame on me since I am an American). However, my PC fried and I had to make due with a cheap Intel desktop I had lying around. Always the tinkerer, I had decided to load Linux on it and ditch windoze, but I had issues getting SH3 to play. It was reading around subsim that I found out about Aces of the Deep and Silent Hunter: Commander's Edition -- I quickly loaded DOSBOX on my Linux machine to get a quick fix for my subsim edition. I did not expect much since these were DOS-era games, but HOLY COW. AOTD and SHCE blew my mind and in some ways I love them more than any of the modern SIlent Hunters.

In fact, they are my go-to subsims for PC gaming now. Playing SHCE sparked my interest in Pacific Fleet boats, and I've been hooked ever since (this was around 5 years ago or so). These two games will forever remain on my HD and I expect I will be playing them until I die.

Because I have family members who served on fast attack boats, I got interested in modern subs after chatting with them and hearing their stories. I watched the Hunt for Red October for the first time around 2016 and, although not very realistic, got me hooked on modern subsimming. So I installed Jane's 688i, Sub Command and now Cold Waters. Love them all.

I never got into SH4 much (I find SHCE far superior, with better AI and charm/atmosphere), so that gives me my pacific fix. And SHV was neat, but buggy and I uninstalled it after a couple hours.

I've bought Wolfpack and other subsims on steam, and it is a great time to be a subsimmer!

I'm also so obsessed with sub games that I have purchased three boardgames (Silent Victory, the Hunters/Hunted, and UBOOT) - if you are at ALL a PC subsimmer/fan of SH series, I highly recommend getting Silent Victory or the Hunters from GMT games.

The "subsims" I have on patrol currently are:

Silent Victory
Aces of the Deep
SIlent Hunter: Commander's Edition
Sub Command

Still rocking Linux btw!

In addition to subsimming, I am an avid boardgamer (of the wargame variety) and I own many tactical wargames such as Combat Commander, Band of Brothers and Conflict of Heroes. There is an awesome world of games outside of computer stuff and I'm still exploring it all.
