If Trump was found guilty after a trial in the Senate I believe he would be automatically barred from running for President.

Article II, section 4 provides that officers impeached and convicted “shall be removed from office”; Article I, section 3, clause 7 provides further that “judgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States.”

Where the plot thickens Jim is whether a private citizen can be impeached. Unless the whole process is concluded by Jan. 20 Trump will be a private citizen. Experts from both sides disagree so it's gonna be a legal battle for sure.

They can do anything they want to do, but this won't be along the lines of 50/50 with the tie breaker being the VP elect Harris.

The democrats will need two thirds of the majority to win the impeachment trial, but the word going around now is that you can't impeach a private citizen.

Just six more days and Trump will be a private citizen. This whole thing could end in the Senate without a vote.

Impeachment was designed to remove an elected official from office ... Trump will already be removed.

He has a lot going in his favor

That is obviously not the only goal. They want to prevent Trump from running in 2020. And if they accomplish that it may not solve all of the Dems problems. Trump may end up being a king maker. Or a queen maker if you know what I mean.

Impeaching Rump now would be a waste of the senate's time.
If they don't want Rump to run again they need only deny him the party nomination.

As a private citizen, Rump could still face charges from the DOJ.
I think a prison stretch might humble him a bit.

Chair of the California Democratic Party Rusty Hicks doesn’t believe that. “This recall effort, which really ought to be called the ‘California Coup,’ is being led by right-wing conspiracy theorists, white nationalists, anti-vaxxers and groups who encourage violence to our democratic institutions,” said Hicks.


The Democratic party is getting heat for those comments at a Tuesday press conference for trying to tie the recall to the rioters who stormed the Capitol.
