And all I had to do was shoot my MGs at it.
Anyway: My first kill with the Hurribomber, a He-111 literally explodes into pieces as my four Hispanos tear into it. Meanwhile its kameraden pepper me with MG fire to little avail. The airfield below receives its fair share of the battle... Raptors cannons find their mark as I circle the dogfight, Winchester. Raptor: "Argh...no...don't spin!" Down and back round into the bombers goes Raptor, quite literally into them in fact... I decide to RTB, and head for the airfield, however I am rudely interrupted by a 109 which shears my port wingtip off, fortunately my magic light still works and I'm able to make a good emergency landing on all three wheels. I pull up and switch off the engine, happy to be safe on the ground...and then I look over at the near ground... Meanwhile AI 'Arclight's plane explodes under the combined effort of two 109s, leaving 'Arclight's corpse to do an almost perfect swan dive into the ground. Task Force comes in to land (on his second attempt) trying to persuade his 190 to slow down. I suggest slipping it slightly, and he manages a bouncy landing on the second go. Hunter died somewhere, somehow. Second mission. After coming to the conclusion that my little Hurribomber really isn't up to the requirements I need it to be (more ammo, faster) I hop into the empty seat of Arclights P-39. I like this aircraft, although it still smells faintly of cheese. This picture gives you some idea of how well this mission went...and that was against 110s with a couple of 109 escorts!! I almost got a 110 but sadly his escort blindsided me, I caught fire and exploded shortly afterwards. Third mission Part-way through this mission my Track-IR decides to up sticks on me, leaving me stuck with a 'straight-ahead' view...not ideal in dogfight conditions... After destroying one Stuka (the thing literally exploding in front of me) and scaring another, I come in to land only to find Hunter has beaten me to it. As I park up, Hunter gets a visitor... I (messily) take off to try to intercept. The 109 strafes Hunter again, turns and then flies straight into the ground. I catch up with the other 109 which had just put Raptor into the deck and fire my MGs at it, scaring it so much that it immediately stalls, enters a violent spin and smashes into the deck. Annoyingly I don't get any credit for it since my MGs went wide. Hunters plane catches fire and explodes shortly afterwards as I come round to land, Task Force meanwhile had been whalloped earlier on in the mission...which left me as the sole survivor. Raptor: So Oberon is the only survivor Hunter: Yup, amazing. Raptor: Perhaps it's some sort of reverse magic, if you put him in a stall bucket, he'll never stall it... Don't bet on it guys. |

Where did the reputation of stallbucket come from anyway? Raptor stalling it?
I'm more likely to black out than stall it. The former happened once, the latter never.

The engine placement apparently unbalances it, which causes some rather crazy spins. I suppose it's not quite as bad when it comes to stalling as, say, the P-51 (though it still stalls quite a bit, how you people manage not to stall it at all, I have no idea), but when it does it's a lot harder to recover.

I'll have to pull into one and see about the recovery then. I just found it gives enough warning to avoid getting there normally.

Indeed, compared to the Spitfire which bites your hand off if you stray too far with little warning (which is unprototypical) the P-39 is quite a tame bird with plenty of warnings before you stall her, although due to her flight characteristics, I imagine getting out of a stall would be difficult. I'll have to do the same as Arc and see.

It's quite a simple lesson, shoot down the enemy, don't get shot.
See, actual dogfighting is a piece of cake. Now getting to and from the dogfight on the other hand . . .

Maybe we should find a 2-seater. I'll do the flying, you do the fighting.

SPAD A2. I built a model of one for my wargaming.
[edit] Not a SPAD, but something similar.
