When they sent me to meet my ship in the far western Pacific, my last day at San Diego NTC was spent policing the outer reaches of the drill field, picking up trash and cigarette butts from 0600 until 1630. They flew us up to Travis AFB, and the next day at about 0900 we were still sitting around when an airman wandered in and said "Hey guys, want a tour of the base?"

On the other hand, the Air Force certainly has the smartest enlisted men. In which other branch do the grunts send their officers out to do the fighting and dying?

We've all seen pictures of you. You have trouble standing up in less than thirty seconds.

I'd say every branch that has an air wing, which means all of them. Even in the Army Chopper pilots are at least Warrant Officers.

They don't take just anybody. You have to score decently on your ASVAB. Before High school graduation, I was all set on joining the army, and wasn't too far away from signing some papers, going to MEPS, and "DEP"ing in. My lifes goal was to jump out of planes, kick butt and take names.

Then one day the AF recruiter called me, saying he was impressed with my ASVAB scores and wanted me to come down to the office to talk. As i recall, i scored a 97 in mechanical. Since i was already in an ROTC like program that was affiliated with the AF at the time (no army one near by), i said, "sure why not". Heh,. Well, obviously his sales pitch worked.

Only problem is, i signed up as "General Mechanical" since nothing specific was open. I signed on to be a Jet Mechanic, and they made me a construction worker. AF has something exactly like the Navy SeaBee's... who would have thunk it. Shame they don't advertise that. It's all about the high tech jobs in the recruiting office. What a bunch of crock.

I never could figure out what Red Horse's mission was

1. Was it to kill the enemy and then build crap?

2. Build crap while taking fire and then kill the enemy once construction was completed?

3. Kill the enemy while building crap?

I was always confused by this.

It is probably build crap crappily, then have it collapse on your enemy, killing them with crap you have built

Build crap while at risk of taking fire is the closest answer. The Horse is self contained and equiped to handle's it's own security. I never had to build crap while getting shot at thankfully. But you do get extra ground training, you do get to play with some cool toys, and you get an Special Experience Indentifier stamped on your record for your trouble.

So yeah, back to my point in all my ranting here..not all who are in the Air Force, sit in chairs and fly desks, where their biggest job hazzard, is a paper cut.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA! The one that sticks out the most was this SrA whos first name was Sue. (witholding last name in case she finds this post through google, tracks me down and kicks my ass, but she's was well known through TWO red horse squadrons) One of her arms was as big around as one of my legs. That bull dyke was built like a pit bull. Rip your head off and crap down your neck if you crossed her. The one cute girl in our unit, was ummm her ahh... partner.. or so was the rumor.
