A wonder of chemistry (in chemistry it wouldn't be possible to be both a metal and organic).

Is it of volcanic origin?

Exactly said, part of it is metallic.
You're on the right path with volcanoes ..

This neither lives in or around the US, nor Europe.
I said it is organic, so what is sought for is not a volcano (but they play a major role for its existence, in a lot of aspects).
It has only be found in a few locations.

^ Not Indonesia.
It seems it only exists in certain conditions, in the indian ocean.

There is iron embedded in its housing as in those scales you can see on the photos. You can pick it up with a magnet.
It's shell is so tough that some engineers think about military armour based on the material.

"The volcano snail could go extinct if conservation efforts are not made for it with the onset of seabed mining and exploration. Its habitats are on the verge of being destroyed by human activity."

Probably existent since a long time, but no one really knows yet.
I protest! your 'correct' answer to my above quote should have been: " you're half-right; stay on the (sulpherous) scent and perhaps we'll 'sea' U at the finish"... Actually, this puzzle was driving me nuts-I'd seen this particular picture before but couldn't place it; my Aricept tablets are past their expiration date! Congrats to Jimbo!
