Other vaccines showed 95% protection but the Oxford jab is cheaper and easier to store and distribute.

Boris Johnson praised scientists and volunteers for the trial's "fantastic" results.

The UK prime minister will explain the detail of England's return to the "three tier system" when lockdown ends on 2 December at 15:30 GMT

Parts of the system will be tougher, but gyms and shops will reopen and a closing time curfew for pubs and restaurants will be eased.

UK-wide coronavirus rules on gatherings and travel over Christmas are still yet to be confirmed.

Two more advantages: the Oxford jab costs only a fraction of the vaccines by Biontech/Pfizer, and Moderna, and the British have already build a strong alliance with production partners across the globe, making their jab probably the one that will indeed become the "vaccine for the hugh crowds and masses " around the globe. They are partnering with over 20 production sites outisde Britian around the globe.

Yes, I think it is beginning to look that way but I'm hopeful Boris won't be like another leader we all know and decide BRITAIN FIRST to the potential detriment of other countries.

News I read was Oxford/Astrazeneca is on hold in the U.S. until further testing. However the Pfizer/BioNtech and Moderna are a go. All three I hear require two doses. However the fear is side effects may stop some people from getting the second. Estimated cost for each dose by manufacture is $4.00/$15.00/$19.00. Expecting immunization to begin in the U.S mid-December.

Matt Hancock has been taking questions at a joint session of the Health and Social Care Committee and Science and Technology Committee.

He defends NHS test-and-trace, saying it was not to blame for the second lockdown.

The health secretary also says the UK should be "getting back to normal" after Easter.

A meeting of the government's Cobra committee will be held this afternoon to discuss restrictions for the UK over Christmas.

Earlier, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the UK nations were "very close" to agreeing a co-ordinated response and an announcement would be made this week.

Mr Shapps added that people should plan journeys carefully and consider not travelling at Christmas at all.

An advisor to US President-elect Joe Biden on Covid-19 has warned that the US remains in a phase of "uncontrollable spread" of the virus which will take weeks to reverse.

Dr Atul Gawande told the BBC there would soon be 2,000 deaths a day, which could have been avoided by enforcing basic safety measures. He said many hospitals were overwhelmed and critically short of staff, just as infections were exploding.

However, Dr Gawande said behaviour was starting to change and the US was now on a path to recovery.

This week millions of Americans are defying warnings against travel and instead are flying across the US to join family or friends for Thanksgiving on Thursday. The travel has prompted concerns the pandemic will further worsen.

On Monday the country reported a further 150,000 cases, according to the Covid Tracking Project. How to manage the pandemic has become a strongly politicised issue. On Tuesday Republican Senator Ted Cruz caused controversy by suggesting Americans defy advice to celebrate Thanksgiving virtually.
